Hi all. I've been paddling for a while now and have got myself up to doing grade 3 rivers fairly competently. So far I've been using club boats so i think its time to begin looking at getting my own boat, I'm not quite sure what exactly i should be looking at though. I'm 5'10 and 70 kg. I'm not that interested in all out play but after that I'm not sure, I wouldn't want something that would make me complacent on the rivers I'm currently doing, but would also allow me to push up to doing grad 4 if not 5 rivers. Any Ideas?

No one got any opinions?

Was looking through the Internet and found a few possibilities, what do people think of them?

Pyranha Stretch www.pyranha.com/osb/itemdetails.cfm?ID=141
Dagger GT www.daggereurope.com/
Dagger Juice playak.com/kayaks.php?id=113
WS EZG 50 www.wavesport.com/ezg-50

What do people think of them? any other suggestions?

Seems you are tending towards a 'river runner' from the boats you've listed. Are you not keen on a creek boat?

The boats you've listed will be good on rivers that may challenge you with more length, and hence speed, than a play boat and higher edges. They will never spin and perform as well as a play boat though. A good bet is a creek boat, from what I've heard about Ireland. I just watched the Irish DVD 'Huck'd' again tonight and the rivers in Ireland seem highly rain dependant with some sweet creeks... Decision, decisions... Important to match your boat with the conditions you're faced with and what your end goal is. Naturally that is to have fun but how so, that depends on you... ;-) Good luck deciding what you really want. Then it's time to decide that boat. Hope that helps a little. Have a schweeeet evening

I don't have anything against creekers, only that I've been told that for what I'm doing at present, ie grade 3 rivers, it would be overkill and could possibly be bad for my paddling as I'd become complacent. that's why i was looking at something less than a creeker, but still something that would allow me to advance onto tougher rivers, however i don't know may people with these type of boats which is way I posted here looking for suggestions.

As for Hucked, I'd say it'll be a long time before i could ever contemplate doing tat sort of stuff!

I've said it before and say it again - the boat you paddle should not depend on the grade of the rivers rather than the NATURE of the rivers you are paddling. There are class III creeky runs that I won't touch without a creek boat and then there are some big water class V I'm totally comfortable in my playboat. So don't look just the grade, but more importantly the nature of the water you are paddling.

As Adrian suggested most of the Irish rivers are low volume (creeky) by nature and a proper creek boat won't be overkill over there. Contrary, if your looking forwards pushing your paddling towards class IV and V a proper creek boat seems like a right tool for that.

Re:Boats 17 years 2 months ago #20460

Yep, as I said in my post above. A boat to suit the conditions you're faced with... Thanks for the backup TV. ;-)

Weird that people say you will get lazy paddling a creek boat. Don't you want to make your paddling experience as safe and as fun as possible. Why make a river any harder than it has to be? :ask: I love my creek boat and paddle it a lot! When the river is full of rocks, a creek boat is a better way to go. Grading rivers is too subjective anyway to base buying a boat on what someone grades as the stuff you're paddling... Most accidents happen on what would be perceived as 'easy' water. Just my :2cents:

Ok after taking all that into consideration I'd be looking at a few boats. I intend to try out as many of these as possible, but I'd appreciate if anyone has any pointers about any.

Blis-Stick Scud
Pyranha Ammo
Pyranha Burn
Dagger Mamba
LL Remix
WS Diesel

Are the Burn and the Diesel river runners or creekers? according to the manufacturing stats they both seem as big as many Creekers, and i know people who would consider all the boats i listed above as creekers too. is the definition more of a personal thing or is there a definite line?

Since your are doing the right thing by going the demo route I would add the Bliss-Stick Mystic to your list. I know there are plenty running around your area. The more boats you demo the more informined you will be and I think you will love the boat.

Good luck in your quest.

The Diesel is a river runner that is still quite playfull, the Burn is marketed as a river runner but its definately a full on creeker, just has rails for moving round on the river with.

I'm a bit confused by the Remix as this is a full displacement hull river runner and will handle differently to all the other boats you've listed. Maybe have a look at the 2008 Jackson Hero. They've changed the boat design completely and it looks a beauty. Similar to the Ammo but the hull is based in the Jackson Fun.

I would also consider the Habitat aswell, had a diesel for 2 paddles wasn't the best not great down river oranything for that matter, where as the habitat kicks ass on everything from class II through to steep V plus more comfy.

Re: Market Research For Uni Project 17 years 1 week ago #21155

i think it depends on the style of what you want to do. If you say you do g 3 rivers atmo you could push yourself on them by choosing a boat which you can do tricks on n stuff whilst being stable so id go for what you were going for before personally but its up to the style you want to ride because if you get a creek boat it might limit you to that kind of paddling you might be better off getting an all round boat. But its up to you

if you want a boat that is likely to break when you touch it buy a disel.

if i was spending the money i would say a pyhrana ammo. you get the high volume, flat hull and sweet outfitting

order from wwtcc.com for a great deal
