Hi,

A few people have been asking me about camera equipment.

Up to last year I was using a Canon T90 35mm, with a 28mm, 35mm and 70-210mm canon lenses (all fully manual). The whole setup cost me less than 300quid on e-bay! My preferred film is Fuji Velvia 100F or Fuji Provia 400F.

This past year I have been using the Canon 5D, alternating between 2 main lenses. Canon USM L 24-70mm f2.8 and a Canon USM L 70-200mm f2.8 (with a 2x converter to bump it up to 400mm).

I almost always use polarizing filters, and for landscapes a 2 stop ND Grad filter. Sunny days help a lot also!

I only usually carry one lens on the river each day as they are so big and heavy, preferring a watershed bag than a peli case, as it is easier to fit between your legs, or behind the seat.

Cheers

Sam

Sam,

A nice collection of images - you have a good eye. I can see the dof the 2.8 lenses are giving you.

I also shoot a 5D and considering adding the 70-200 2.8. Do you find the image quality to be much degraded when using the 2x TC ?

I use a 100-400 L which is a great range for me but at 400, it's quite soft.

Hi Irwin,

Generally I have been very impressed with the 2x converter. You do loose 2 f stops though.

Also as you would expect a 400mm you are demanding a lot from the lens, so it helps to have a tripod, fast shutter speed and sufficiant dof to ensure a crisp image.

I also find the auto focus can be a bit slow, but as a rule I usually shoot with manual focus, so this isn't too much of a problem for me.

Cheers!

I browsed through almost all of the photos a few days ago and I must say, well done Sam! There are some superb photos in there. Taking photos on the river can be challenging and sometimes also a pain in the ass. Most people never make the effort… Thanks for sharing.

Although India is low on my list of places to kayak your photos are very inspiring. Looking forward to more from you.

See you on the river someday.

Cheers,

All good points about loss of stops, AF, shutter speed and quite true.

What I was really interested in knowing though was how image quality at 200mm with the TC x2 compares with, say, not using the TC and simply getting closer.

To what degree does the TC 2x degrade image quality?

Good question  I would guess not too much, providing it is super clean. Although it would, but to the degree. Let's find out..

Good question!

To be honest I've not really put it to the test and compared that closely.

Apart from issues to do with camera shake, I've not noticed any lose in quality.

I'll have a play and get back to you on that one! I'll email you the results of 2 images at 200mm both with and without the TC.
