Keeping kayaking cheap 19 years 3 months ago #2060

Hey I'm new to the site and I've only been paddling for about 6 months but I love it! But the problem is, that after spending all my money on a boat I have nothing left. I'm also currently paddleless. So if any of you guys have got any great money saving tips or know of any bargain paddles let me know! (look at the last topic on keeping your hands warm and see how I saved around £20)

Join a club, most of clubs has paddles you can use, and otherwise someone of your club mates will give you one until you have money for a second hander

Carlisle Magic Whitewater is a great paddle for the cost. I beat the heck out that paddle while learning the roll and basics, and it held up well. It retails for about $80 in the US. I'm not sure you're going to find a paddle for less than that, and you could afford 2 or 3 for the price of one of the others.

The club suggestion is a really good idea!!

Prijon €25, a little bit less I think. But they don't like it to be transported on a trailer.

Nathan, make sure you get a paddle with an oval shaft. Anything that does'nt have an oval shaft is useless!!! If you ever loose the slightest grip of your paddle it will spin and you will not be able to orient yourself.

handpaddles may not be the best choice for a beginner, but hey whatever works. Ebay is worth taking a look at, and so is the for sale segment on boatertalk.com. Classifieds maybe, dunno about them...

Hi,

I agree with the other guys,
the best choice is to join a club, not just for lending a paddle.
My advice is: take your time and test as much paddles you can.
Nowadays there are so many models with different material, blade shape, shaft sizes etc...
Don't be in a hurry buying a cheap paddle, unless you do very easy things it is better to have a paddle you can rely on.
At the same time if you decide to spend lot of money for a paddle remember that even the best paddle in the world can be broken or can be lost.
(I broken and lost a roughstuff tempest :~((( )

Ciao
