Your head weighs about Eight pounds. around 3 kilograms. I have seen many rolls ruined because the person couldnt get their head down. This is, I believe, the single most important part of the roll.

Another very important aspect with raising your head first, is that you will get your hipsnap all wrong, since trying to pull your head up will make you use the \"wrong\" knee and preventing the boat from flipping up.

The reason that bringing your head up last is important is that if you bring it up there is a force in the opposite direction (back under water) that is exerted on your boat .

If you want to see this work, try holding your boat on edge with your head high then quickly throw it towards the water. you will feel your boat flatten out under you.

\"If you want to see this work, try holding your boat on edge with your head high then quickly throw it towards the water. you will feel your boat flatten out under you.\"
Exactly

One other thing I can add, is that when your head comes out last, your making a complete hip snap. It allows you to contract the upper part of your obliques forcing you to \"bring\" your lower body under you.

If you sit in your chair and pull your head to your right shoulder as far as you can, you'll feel the contraction at your abs under your right arm and you'll notice that your right hip wants to pull up as well..

Keeping your head out last allows you to have an effortless and smooth roll.

Keep workin on it!

The trick to getting your head out last is just to lie across the back deck of your boat and look towards the surface of the water
Hope this helps =]

This is a bit of a 'cheat' way to get your head up. A lot of people do throw their weight backward to complete their roll. It's possibly better to do this than go back under. However, I know in Australia we have a lot of shallow rivers, so bringing your head up on your back deck is not a good idea. It's ok when you're learning to roll. But once you can roll up, continually try to improve your technique. You should come up sitting straight or slightly forward for maximum safety!

But again, this also depends on the types of rivers you run. If you're running deep rivers with no chance of hitting any rocks, it's not such an issue.

Also, leaning back is only used for back deck rolls. in the C to C, you want to keep a neutral position. As for the head, this could partly be psychological, because if you have your head come out first, then you will probably get it up just enough for a breath, not thinking as much about actually rolling the boat over. Also, once you have a really strong roll, then you probably wouldn't need to worry about your head as much.

I would always try and finish my roll in the neutral to forward position. I'm so much more balanced and can start paddling again as soon as I'm up, where as it takes a second longer when your leaning on your stern, plus more balanced if your coming up in swirling water.. maybe in a hole.
