Cleaning/Protecting our Valuable Gear!? 17 years 1 month ago #20862

So, This is a pretty Noobie question that I can pretty much answer for myself but I would like to know what you guys and the pros do to take care of their gear??? I use 303 on my latex gaskets but what about all my neoprene and the rest of my drytop?

What should I do to care for my expensive gear?

Simply rinse in fresh water and let dry thoroughly.

That has worked for me for over 20 years. My first wetsuit (over 20 years old!) is still going strong (although I had to repair a spot but hey, this thing got used a lot :) ).

As for latex, rinse with fresh water and let dry. When dry, put some talcon powder (you know, the stuff they put on babies' bottoms) on the latex parts and there you are.

Other paddling gear: again, just rinse and let dry.

BTW: Chlorine really kills neoprene so after a pool session make sure you rinse your gear very thoroughly! If possible, use an old sprayskirt and keep your good stuff for paddling rivers.

just my 2 cents,

Cheers,

Michiel

 I always wash my kit, after every paddle. Sand can cause a fair amount of damage to certain things. Once there is sand on something like a dry top and then stuffed in a bag, the abrasion can cause damage.

Drying it properly, out of the sun, is very important. I went to the UK for a month about 2 years back and when I returned my one dry top had almost destroyed itself as I had stored it slightly damp.. oops. :|

So I knew about talcon powder for wetsuit latex gaskets but was wondering if i could use some no brand name baby powder.. I'd think it'd make a weird gunk with the water.. like baby powder cement. haha should I get A specific brand?

what about throwing the neoprene parts (booties, rash guard, sprayskirt) in the wash with some kind of dive shop wetsuit cleaner or a low grade wash detergent?

i put my wetsuit in the washing machine on a cold rinse with a fast spin this rinses and realy speeds up the drying time. iv had no problems doing this after every paddle and my wetsuit is almost 5 years old.
