Bon courage Adrian! I was operated 22 years ago and have 2 screws in my right shoulder. Still paddling to grade IV+ and V (very occasionally) and just got back from the Kameng expedition. So dont worry - you'll be back - you just have to grit your teeth, work at it, and walk the walk every now and then. Go for it and get well - Ian

Thanks Noel, thanks Ian. Appreciate the messages! :) Last time I posted I couldn't even breathe normally from the pain but now I'm much better already. Training 5 times per day and also washing under my arm every time I exercise to avoid fungal growth.. My range of motion is already improving. I'm positive I will come out much better and stronger. It is very hard to type with only my left hand....and also to move this damn mouse! hehehe. I can really move fast too, covering 500m in about 20 minutes.

Luckily the screws dissolve in about 18 months but the sutures never will (4 of them to the 3 anchors), but shouldn't be a hassle. B)

Cheers,
Adrian :cheer:

Adrian - it took me about 1 year post-op to get back into normal WW boating. The most unpleasant bit was an occasional muscle 'twang' which was a bit like an electric shock - thats one to watch out for. However, I guess that the surgery is much less invasive these days - certainly my operation scar enabled me (for several years) to convince my kids I'd been bitten by a shark! Ian

I'm sure a lot has changed in the last 22 years.... B) My op was done (thankfully) entirely through arthroscopic instruments through 4 small cuts, none of which even needed stitches! So with fiber optics and an awesome colour television, they could do everything. 6 - 9 months max is what the conservative doctor says. I'm doing my exercises like my life depends on it and am ultra determined to get back ASAP. :woohoo: Luckily no big scars. :side:

This went a bit off topic from what it was, but it’s still shoulder related…

Doctor and what not reckoned I’d be out of kayaking for at least 9 months, preferably even 12. So much for that…

So after less than 9 weeks out of surgery, I got a mate to paddle me down the (I was the ‘lucky’ passenger) Palmiet River on my sit on top kayak. Probably one of the larger rapids run in a SOT. And in case you’re wondering, we didn’t make it. Almost though! Pained my shoulder and managed a dead leg but all good.

And then just under 15 weeks from surgery I managed to get on a local river at a flood level in my own kayak. Complete with winds hovering around the 50 knot mark, which made paddling very challenging, even walking with the boat was tough! Took it very easy, all good, once again. :woohoo:

Super stoked with my recovery.

After that I paddled the Palmiet again, at a much lower level. And then the Molenaars. Today I’m thinking of hitting some small waves (ocean) as it’s a perfect day outside and a light offshore wind and tmrw another river. B)

I think, with hard training and lot’s of exercise and enough determination, one can get back into action a lot sooner than one thinks. Although I am taking it very easy and being extra careful for sure. Good luck to anyone out there in the same boat, so to speak. ;) It’s not a fun road to travel… :)

AWESOME TO HEAR!!
well what do doctors know anyways.. unless your doctor is a kayaker too I don't think he could actually tell someone to stay off the river for a year:lol:

Shot Dan! :) Well, I guess they know more than me! But so far, so good. The surf was nice and small today. Ideal for getting back onto the horse. Stayed until the sun dipped below the horizon. It feels great to be alive again! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

This evening: (I bought myself a waterproof camera!)

Shot Chris! I paddled again today, on a river. Took it easy and even portaged a rapid I would normally have run. At least I had the brains to portage... hehehehe. (or no more balls) Summer is pulling round here now... You guys are stepping back into shorter days.. Ouch. Oh well, the wheels turns! Enjoy the rest of the weekend. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
