Yak gear? 17 years 2 weeks ago #21061

I’d just like to find out what the general consensus is on Yak gear? What do you think? Thumbs up or down?

I’m looking at some new float bags and am considering some Yak bags. They are pretty lightweight but the material seems to be very stiff and brittle. When putting it into the back of a few boats to see how it fitted the material creased very quickly. Very similar to the way a modern mono windsurfing sail does when abused, if you know what I mean. To me that’s bad news as it creates a weak point immediately. Maybe I’m being over cautious…

Any comments on their gear and specifically their float bags would be appreciated. :whisper: Shot. B)

I have some Yak gear (Buoyancy and Helmet) and I cant fault it, although I have heard some people complain about other pieces of gear they make.

almost all my gear is yak. it the cheapst stuff on the market but the quality is always good. iv heard of a few older paddlers (and gear snobs who only buy the most expensive stuff) complaining about the quality of yak gear in the past but they havent had any recently so maybe the quality problem has been fixed. i once fell on cncrete with my yak cag on and slid on the elbows and its stll dry even though i did thing the material was very thin when i got it.

Shot Dougie. I've decided to take the bouyancy bags and see how they last.. (picking them up tonight) I'm sure they'll be fine. :cheer:

Thanks again!

I have a Yak Falcon paddle jacket and the inside seems went (unstuck) very quickly. In fairness Yak replaced the jacket immediately, and at no cost, on the basis of digital photos, so fair play to them. No problems with the new one.

Just to report back on this thread. The float bags worked, but got leaks in them pretty quickly. Such a pity.

I also got a Yak dry top (I think it's the Falcon) for free and have used it a LOT in the surf only (and one 4 day paddle) for just over a year now. I must say, it is still dry and still serving me well! :) I use it only in salt water and save my better dry top for the rivers.. But this one has surprised me and works well. It has a simple neoprene neck but yet keeps me dry. The red colour is starting to fade now but I guess salt water and African sun is pretty hard on gear.

Adrian out ;)
