Executing cartwheels in a hole 17 years 1 day ago #21344

So I was out at a little playspot and was practicing my 360s and edge control. and began messing around with a stern to front cartwheel. Pretty much when I get up to my bow I stall out on the rotation and flop over. :S

I will be practicing this in the pool and the lake (when it warms up a little)

In flat water I usually start by double pumping or easy cleaning into a stern stall and then getting the bow under me.. where I then flop over.. but I'm having kind of a hard time with the mechanics of keeping the rotations going...

I was wondering if any of you guys had some tips for me.. head, paddle, shoulders, little things to practice first??? anything would help:)

yo man

dont worry or think so much on your first end and initiation (but obviously your initiation needs to be atleast alright to link some ends).

focus alot on using your head to lead your cartwheeling
naturally you want to ALWAYS be leading with your head and looking up the hole.
Try picking a spot just on or above the horizon line of the hole. focus on trying to look back around to that point every time you come back around on your stern. ya dig?

That may not help at all but it will come with time regardless

thanks! I kinda got the hang of that when I learned flat 360s but never really thought to be strict on doing that with the cartwheel. Thanks again!

Right, I made a little video this morning. Took one take on the narration so it's far from perfect but it serves the purpose! Hopefully it will help you, and also a lot of other people trying to cartwheel, on flat water at least... So not a video for holes but getting the technique on flat water first can often be easier. Any questions/comments, shoot! Enjoy:

Jeroen: The default for uploading a video is still to have comments disabled. The description always gives me a LOT of trouble and says there are characters in the description that are not allowed. I'm not sure if it doesn't allow apostrophes? Even once I removed everyone from what I had to say, it still came up as an error. Everytime an edit on a video is done, comments are straight away disabled and the box must be ticked, again.

Thanks Noel.. It isn't the 'complete' video but I think it will help a lot of people. I should actually write a few notes about it to fill some gaps that I think it has. Probably will do that and post it up on my site at some stage.

Adrian! just wanted to tell you that I've been putting your advice to good use. I can now do 4 and 5 point cartwheels:woohoo::woohoo: .. soon I'll be a cartwheelin' maniac! Thanks a bunch!B) B) B) B) B)

I do have a question for you though.. I think I'll get it down soon but I wanted some expert advice:
what can I do to help me keep my weight over my boat as I link the stern to the bow and keep up the rotations???
whenever I flip over in the cartwheel, it's generally in the stern-stall position..:S

Hey Danger,
Thought I'd jump in and answer for Ades. When you have come round on your stall you need to make sure that your body is leading the boat, like a wind up top and your boat will follow. It is also important to be leaning forward when your stern is in the water, this insures that your weight is over the boat and keeps you upright.
Hope that helps.
