newbie 16 years 11 months ago #21558

Hello everyone, I'm new to kayaking and am having a sizing issue hopefully someone can help me with. I am 6'2" and about 170 and having some trouble finding a kayak i can fit in comfortably. I'm interested in something i can river and take in some moderate rapids. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

I think most people would recommend finding a place that will let you try various kinds of boats, and then sample a lot of them until you find one that feels right for you. And get instruction at the same time. Then you can decide whether you want a play boat, a river runner, some combination of the two, etc. There are plenty of boats (too many!) that would fit you, but they are usually different in large and small ways, and you're the only person who can decide what those differences mean to you.

If you get hooked on kayaking, chances are that you'll get more than one boat. I have five, and I use each one for different things. (Whitewater boat is a large Fluid Spice.)

exactly, DEMO DEMO DEMO DEMO and DEMO again.. Seeing as your new, its likely that you'll run the river and start getting a feel for your specific style and what direction you want to take your paddling. That being said, I would pick a boat that makes a good runner but has potential for you to play a little and surf. Your height and size is great for a ton of boats so DEMO and borrow and test different boats until you find one that fits you like you want and brings a smile to your face :cheer:

PS. every store I've demoed from credits the demo to the purchase of a boat from that store as well, so keep that in mind if something catches your eye and you could end up getting $10-40 off a boat! :silly:

Here are some good brands for you to research
1.Jackson Kayak
2.Wavesport
3.Liquid Logic
4.Dagger
5.Fluid
6.Riot
7.Bliss Stick
8.Drago Rossi

(the top 3 are pretty beginner friendly from the few boats I've paddled)
