Help me choose a paddle 16 years 11 months ago #21658

My fiancee and I just bought 2 Hurricane Santee 116 Sport kayaks. We are brand new to kayaking. We basically will be using these on lakes and slow rivers. I paddle low angle and high angle. She paddles mostly low angle. I'm 5'8" and she is 5'3" but we have the same torso height. These boats are 28" wide. We are nearly ready to purchase two Bending Branches Whisper paddles for $50 each. Should we step up to a different paddle? We demo'd these kayaks with a 210 and then a 220 fiberglass paddle... don't know what kind. When we purchased the boats, we rented a 230 and 240 Bending Branches Whisper. We both liked the 230 MUCH better than the 240. I think the 220 MIGHT be better than the 230, but it's hard to say. Any ideas? I really can't test any other paddles. They only rent the Whispers.

I don't have any experience with the paddles you've mentioned. But it's always best to demo before you buy. If you've demo'd one paddle and like it, you have to ask yourself is it worth the risk of getting another paddle you haven't demo'd?

Or possibly ask the return policy of the other paddles. You may be able to buy them, then have a quick paddle in a lake, making sure not to scratch them or anything, and if you really don't like them you may be able to return them? Probably not but you won't know unless you ask.

Good luck!
