Outfitting Questions 16 years 10 months ago #21854

I have as of today, become the owner of a new kayak. I've been looking at all the minicel foam that came with it, thinking about outfitting and such. My main question is which adhesive to use. I've got a shit ton of gorilla glue but I'm worried about burning a hole in my yak. I have plenty of sandpaper in all grit types, an orbital sander, and razors. I'm just wondering what is a good water -proof adhesive to use and any other tool\things I will need before I make the trip to the Hardware Store.....Also does anyone know if bumper sticker glue compromise my hull?

So if any of the more knowledgeable folks out there, have any suggestions or tips I'd greatly appreciate them.

Thanks

super glue should be fine
it is water proof and not a solvent

The vast majority of w/w kayaks are polyethylene and very little sticks to it, indeed it has very few solvents. Look at all the things we put into bottles made with it, gasoline, white spirit etc. etc. Because of this getting anything to adhere to it is difficult.

I have used a contact adhesive such as Evostick to fasten the hip pads into my Necky Gliss and this was satisfactory, I think 'cos there was pressure on them. They peeled of fairly easily when my wider hipped daughter wanted to paddle it.

I am certain that this will not be good enough to use for the thigh strap anchors on my wife's polyethylene canoe. ( See my posts in the canoe section of the forums.) I am going to try Mr. Sticky's polybonder.

Superglue will not stick to some plastics and will not stick to wet surfaces.

When I had a leak between the foam bulkhead and the hull of my sea kayak I tried all sorts of things, then a retailer sold me a sealant made by Sashco, Lexel all purpose. This did the job, I do not know if it would work as a glue.

I suggest you pick one of our suggestions and try it, if it does not work try another.

I've used Genkem's contact adhesive on all my boats and never had a problem. As I am flexible and can put my legs behind my head I find my knees can easily fall to the hull of the boat. A foam pad around the knees protects from a long day in the saddle and a block under each knee keeps me in position. I can also raise up my one knee while pushing down with the opposite knee, giving finer edge control. Even in my oldest boat, a Necky Blunt (my first ever boat), the foam is still there and in position. Even though I don't paddle the boat anymore it has had, and still does, get lots of people in it, mainly beginner kayakers - zero problems with anything glue related. My experience with contact adhesive has been very positive. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Super glue will not work, and is a super expensive option given the quantities needed. Hot glue is rubbish in my opinion too. Just my :2cents:

I'm with Adrian on this one, use a decent contact adhesive THAT is not water soluble, in a ventilated area and no beer (not great combo trust me :drunk: :puke:)
