Custom molding the Plastic in my Boat.. Good Idea??? 16 years 10 months ago #21951

So I recently watched a you tube video on a girl that had decided to reduce the gallons in her boat by heating it up in the oven using the broiler option, then once it was soft, molding it down and squishing it by standing on it.. Doing this to a Liquid Logic Ronin.. brand new boat!

My feet barely squeeze into my WS P52, so..

My question is:
Would it compromise the integrity of the boat if I heated up my boat in the oven then, sitting in it with some insulation on my feet and pushing out the bow so it fit my feet better??? Is this even a good Idea?? I'm scared to hurt my most favorite possession in the world..

Personally I wouldn't do it. I think there's enough boats out there, that if I wanted less volume I could get a different boat. But some females or smaller males may just be too light in most boats to be able to do most of the tricks.

To me, I think it would also be a bit of a safety issue. Having said that though, playboats aren't really that safe when it comes to river running or anything like that anyway. So if all you have a playboat and all you use it for is park and play or in the ocean, I guess it wouldn't really matter.

I wouldn't either do it. You run the risk of ruining the boat and assuming you can actually pull it off, you would have weakened the boat significantly and also taken the resale value to the cleaners. You are better off buying another boat... ;)

I personally have taken volume out of boats and have pumped up the volume in my boats by heating. My friend is also a pro at doing this. With a heat gun or boiling water it can be done well without affecting the stuctural stability of the boat (although i would only do it to a playboat). The hard part is find on object that you can force down the bow of the boat that will pump up the volume in the correct place.
We have used in the past, cans of beans, wine bottles and most recently a bowling ball (which gave great comfort and massive pop for loops).

If you reheat numerous times you do run the risk of doing permanent damage.

Boats are pretty ajustable with a bit of heat, but you will take a hit on the resale value as you can imagine with the below

Don't take this the wrong way bowsie...but for me that picture posted should be reason enough not to attempt this. That's boat looks like it just came from the ghetto...haha :woohoo:

Thats a pretty extream custom job. Defo from the Ghetto.
Usually its just a bit of volume adjustment that gets done, which works a treat.

i to remodle your boat if you do decided to attempt it the best bet is to fasion wood or something to the shape u want ur kayak to change to then when it is heated put the wood in the kayak were you want to alter it this will have to be done each year though

definately would NOT do what was done to the boat in that picture... I was just thinking of pushing my feet so I had about a 1/2 inch more of space on the top of the bow for my feet. But I don't think I'll really be doing that anytime soon..

I have paddled a Wavesport ForPlay for many years, it got to be uncomfortable, so we sold it and bought me a new boat. But I miss that darn thing.

So two weeks ago, we got the jack out of the car, and needed a flat surface to push up the toe box of the boat (the jack barely fit in there, so not much would fit on top of the jack), so we used a diamond concrete radial blade (from an old construction project making concrete countertops).

Jacked it up. Boiled water. Dumped into boat. Let sit for hour. Turned the jack few more times, let sit another hour. Drained, pulled jack out. I now have 1.5 inches of additional room in my toe box on my boat. We were aiming to give my boat boobies (individual toe pockets) but the lack of finding anything to use to put on top of the jack (see above) we just did one long expansion instead.

Goood luck.
