Total Noob... 16 years 9 months ago #22280

Hi all, I recently bought a kayak with my George W. check and I love it. It is a Mainstream Patriot 12ft. (I know it's a low budget boat but I am a big guy and its the only one I could fit in, in my price range). I live in Northern IL. and there are plenty of lakes and slow moving creeks and rivers. I was planning a trip to the Vermilion River. It is rated class II-III so it will be my first time in actual white water. Could any of you post some suggestions, tips or warnings? Is my kayak to long for this or will I be ok?

Thanks in advance, Dan

Blondie

sup... the Verm will be a bit of a challange for that boat... first of all a rec boat is not designed for whitewater, also the verm will be kinda creeky unless there is a good ammt of water moving...

There are plenty of ww folks about you (depending on where in Northern Il you are). would post on some of the local boards like www.bsbs.org (thats in Wi but they can send you where you need to go)

if you want to get into ww paddling (which i suggest you do) I would look at saving up some cash and getting a good used setup. There are lots and lots of posts about newbie gear and suggestions on here.

Also, you arent planning on running the Verm solo are you???? Please say you aren't

Anyway, welcome to kayaking, I hope it changes you life in the way it has changed mine.

If I can help you out anymore just let me know
