Get a block of Minicell foam and carve to fit your cockpit rim, make it as big as possible then trim it down if needed. IF you can't be arsed with that faff, IR sell the Over Thruster (origional one) which works well too

IOs it really worth it to spend the cash on a commercial overthruster or just buy a beach ball???

I would think that a beach ball would work, but it could make it tougher to wet exit. The JK thruster looks like the best idea. Also, you could get a spray skirt with a deck plate, which could help. check out the Special K: www.shopatron.com/product/product_id=IRID77002/232.4

I've used an inflatable beach ball (pretty big) and then stuff that between my legs. Then I use a plastic ball (slightly smaller than a normal soccer ball) and put it on top. Forms a nice bulge and gives good pop. One's PFD can interfere with it though when doing loops. But it's cheap, and it works. Tried to burst my deck in the sea once and let the lip hammer me on a few waves, it held nicely...

Wet exits shouldn't be a concern in play boating unless you're playing in some beastly holes.... :(

BEACHBALL!!

You could also fabricate one out of fiberglass, I couldn't find a link right off, but It's pretty easy if you know anything about fiberglass.
