Filling in drill holes in a Euro-Kayaks Cyphur 16 years 7 months ago #23081

I just picked up an older model Cyphur ( playak.com/kayaks.php?search=cyphur ). There are two drill holes on each side of the kayak toward the bow, half way between the top and bottom of the kayak. I am assuming the drill holes (1/4" dia) were for footbraces. The holes are spaced approximately 15" apart. Currently, carriage bolts and plastic plugs occupy the holes.

The kayak will be used for playing around in the river at the end of my street, no whitewater.

I want to fill in these holes and am unsure how to proceed; I do not know what the kayak is made out of.

Any recommendations how to fill in these holds is appreciated. My initial thoughts are to use a polyethylene stick (www.urethanesupply.com/storepolyethylene.php). Or I use the holes to mount eye bolts for tie downs.

Thanks,
Andrew

there are a few options for this:

1. Use a filler like polyethylene sticks, or if you don't care about appearance, Mighty Putty.

2. Get a screw around 1/2 inch with a nut and make sure it is tight.

3. Get some foam and make it a bulkhead again by using a long screw through the foam.

4. get a different boat, since the Cyphur appears to be a WW boat!

Thanks cjcc.

But I decided to take the plunge (pun intended) and pulled out some PTEX from my ski tuning kit. I did not want to put to much effort into this since the boat will only be used for...well...nothing special. And this boat is so ugly (somebody tried to spray paint it blue); whatever I can do to it will be an improvement.

This is how I filled in the holes.

1. Backed the holes with a left over punch out from an electrical gang box.
2. Heated the PTEX and let drip into the holes to soften the plastic on the boat
3. Then used a cooler part of the PTEX and pressed the melted PTEX into the holes with a spoon and smoothed out the sides
4. Removed the punch out after a few minutes of cooling
5. Carried the boat down to the river. Former holes did not leak. Note to self: A kayak cart sure would be nice.

FYI: this boat is not nearly responsive as my other boat, an Aire Lynx. But still worth playing on, especially when the river is low and hitting river bed (usually sand) is common!

Thanks again,

Andrew
