I am looking for a helmet. Nothing too expensive but gets the job done. Decent protection....not trying to break the bank....this kayaking stuff is expensive.

I am also a motorcyclist, there are standards for helmets, does whitewater have them too? My local paddle shop has used WRSI helmets for $55 Is that too much?

There are a ton of helmets out there. WRSI is the least expensive on the market that I would wear, good coverage, stays on, well thought out, well made and 55USD is a great price. Go for function not fasion. I wear a "Bonk" by Surge Kayaking out of New Zealand www.surgekayaking.co.nz but a lot more that 55$ it's just personal preffrence. I love the coverage it gives, the small brim, a creekers dream and bomber construction. Also have a thing for dealing with smaller companies.

Check out Saz's post on her search for a helmet: playak.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&I...w&id=22831&catid=107 . It seems like most people would rather get a Sweet Strutter/Rocker, even though they are much more expensive.

spend the $ on a good lid... You want to be concious on the water... An extra $ 100 goes a long way with helmets... I recommend the sweet strutter or Shred Ready T-dub ...

Most Kayak helmets are OK. It needs to fit your head properly stay in position and be comfortable so that you are happy to wear it all day. You will find a lot of people with different opinions on what is best. The WRSI helmets are a good lid at a very good price. If it fits yous can't go far wrong with them. But then thats only my opinion. Here in Europe they have to conform to a CE standard but I'm not so sure about the States. Hope that helps a bit.

Well I ended up picking up a Shred Ready Standard. It is plastic...I got it used for $40 from Valley Mill Kayaking.

The helmet feels great on me. I haven't tried anything else....but 40 bucks! What do you guys think? I couldn't find any reviews on this particular helmet

I have seen a carbon fiber/poly helmet get a fist sized circle crack in it... I don't even want to know what it took to get a crack like that in a military grade helmet, and if that rock could do that to a helmet like that, I don't wanna know what it would do to a plastic one. My advice: go with something that's not cheap, because you'll be likely getting something of higher quality down the road. That is if you plan on liking this sport, get something that lasts and will do the job for years to come.

That being said, go with a shred ready for price and still good quality, or sweet helmet. don't get something made of cheap flexible plastic, because the one time you flip, and get the sharp end of a rock in the perfect spot on your helmet to knock you out, you'll be glad you had something that let you stay conscious and alive. ;)
