Lendal paddles? 16 years 6 months ago #23686

I was curious as to your thoughts on Lendal Paddles. Looking at them they seem like pretty awesome paddles. I was leaning toward buying a werner stikine or sherpa, but i just want to know what you guys think. I do a mix of playboating and am getting into some easier class V, but I need a paddle that is very durable and can hold up to Colorado mank.

Certainly the Lendal nylon/carbon blades give a superb compromise between strength, durability and weight. Obviously however, they are never going to be as light as a GRP blade. I have paddled with Lendal Mania (creeking) and Kinetic Power (playing/river running) for the past 15 years and have never broken a blade. Blades are much more likely to wear-down before they break. Hopefully now that production has moved from Scotland to USA, the legendary Lendal quality will continue.

I have grown up using Lendal paddles (about 25 years ago they were the best you could buy around here) and I must say when I picked up a few pairs during this year (old ones, some even with wooden blades and glass fiber shafts!) these were still top notch! Granted, these were all made in Scotland but I am sure the US made blades will be just as good. Although I do regret that for people who start out paddling now it must seem that kayaking gear is either made in the USA or China. Not that it is a really bad thing but I do miss the locally build gear every now and then.

BTW: another brand you should definitely look at is RoughStuff. These paddles are just about bomb proof and very affordable. Not the lightest but definitely among the sturdiest paddles I've ever paddled.

Lendal are pretty awesome paddles.
I've had mine for three years now and have had no problems (apart from me losing it :D)
I reccomend them :)

You will not be disappointed with a Lendal paddle.

4 piece breakdown that can definitely handle the mank, no worries.

Highly recommend.

Keep in mind that he is in Norway...That said, Lendal's headquarters are in GBR, so if you wanted, you could ship a paddle to Finland, since they are members of the European Union, and you shouldn't have to deal with tariffs. I don't really know what else to say.

\\\\\\\\if i could get my hands on Lendal paddles again I would nothing else. The 4 piece breakdown version is awesome. I used one for years with my waveski in the surf. It can take a load and the adjustability is superb.
Had mine stolen from my garage 18months ago, no distributor in SA. :(

@Fluid Tim: A 4-piece breakdown should not be very expensive to send as a regular parcel or include in luggage.

I'm pretty sure there must be a way to get one to SA? Are you connected to Fluid in any way? If so, perhaps Celliers might be visiting the Dutch importers and take a Lendal with him for you? Granted, Kanoshop does not sell Lendal but I won't mind taking him to the other shop that does. BTW: I have no working relationship with either shops :D

I'm not connected to Fluid Kayaks other than the fact that I own a boat they manufacture and absolutely love it!

I'll have a look at on-line shops in europe and find out if they can do something for me.

dankuwel!

Re:Lendal paddles? 16 years 2 months ago #25086

it would be no problem to order a paddle online, and shipping a 4 piece paddle would be no problem. but, I haven't been able to find an online store that have a good assortment of both blades and shafts. Either they have the blade I want, but not the shaft and vica versa.

this is an issue that I am starting to become aware of.

most common options are the bent, split shaft and either very high end carbon paddle blades or touring blades :(

I'll get a chum in the UK to ship the unit to me. I believe Cotswolds Outdoor still stocks lendal

It's been a week now since I sent them a mail asking for good online dealers. Can't say I am too impressed of their response time.

This is really sad to hear - during the 1990s I was dealer for Lendal in Switzerland - they were a fantastic company to work with both in terms of quality, delivery and reliability. I once visited their small factory in Scotland and the workmanship and pride that went into making their paddles was a sight to behold. An old guy painstakingly showed me the best way to glue blades into shafts - he wanted me as dealer to do it properly coz it would reflect badly on him if I didn't.

I do hope that Johnson will restore the Lendal name to its true glory - but the signs are not good.

Sad.
