I am looking for an inexpensive breakdown paddle. The max class that I will be paddling for a few years will probably be class 3/4 at the USNWC, with an occasional trip to Nantahala, Tuckaseegee, etc. I am currently using a 200 cm Werner Desperado, and I don't think that I willl need a really nice Carbon Fiber/Fiberglass paddle as a breakdown, just something that works. Some options would be an Aqua-Bound Shred, Lendal Emergency Paddle, or something that you could buy at a Sports Authority type store. I think a 4 piece would be best, since I am paddling a Fluid Solo S and there is not lots of depth in the stern, since the whole boat is only 7' 3". Also, I am 14 years old, and 5'5" tall (165 cm). I know that my paddle is probably too big for me, but it is good for rec paddling, and I am on flatwater about the same as whitewater.

At 14 $ is an issue I'm sure..

AB is prob the least expensive for sure, Werner is prob best bang for buck...

I'd say if u r confident 3-4 boater and that's what u paddle. Get some hand paddles, cheap and offer some good times to boot... That is my current back up

As some additional info, I have paddled up to class 2 so far, and am still working on my roll. Obviously, I would like to get a nice Werner, but I don't think it makes any sense to have a spare paddle that is better than my main paddle. I wish that Propulsion Technologies (NRS) would make a good 4 piece, since they already have a paddle with asymmetrical blades for only 55.00 www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=1664&deptid=1686 . They do have a breakdown, but it is a 2 piece and I don't know how well it would fit in the stern.

What boat do you paddle?

You tend to get what you pay for and $55 doenst sound like any quality to me...

If youre still learning to paddle and working on a roll, running C2 I would save your cash and spend it elsewhere. Few people i paddle with carry a breakdown. Actually a spare paddle on a run is more the exception than the rule (Im a bad boater, I know), hense y I simply put some hand paddles in my boat and feel better bout it... Like I said b4 hand paddling is pretty fun too

I have been looking at hand paddles for a while, primarily to work on my roll, so this looks like the way to go. My only concern is my posture as far as getting my hands in the water, since I have a wingspan of ~5.5 ft. I don't want to have to lean down to get my hands in the water, because I think that it could be uncomfortable to lean down for an extended period of time. I could take a break between runs at the USNWC, but I don't want to spend 1/2 of my time resting so my back doesn't hurt.

I doubt your back will hurt much, provided you can easily reach the ground on the shore...

your shoulders will get the real workout... My first time using hand paddles was on teh Nolichucki this summer, I could barely lift my boat onto my car at the end  It definately changed up the river for me... was a fun challange

Which hand paddles would you reccommend? I am looking at the Riveraholic pro hand paddles, since they would be easier to get off if I ended up wet exiting. The normal models are also good, but I think that it might take longer to pull of, and could get tangled. Also, do they float?

I couldnt tell you the exact company whos' paddles they are... They are the ones with the tie downs. They kinda float but not super well...

As far as gettgn them off goes, Just push the heel of your hand against the cockpit rim and its off

My last option would be a Sevylor Whitewater Kayak Paddle ( www.sevylor.com/dyn_prod.php?p=STRU143&k=77442 ), but I hate aluminum shafts, so hand paddles seem to be the best option. There are 4 brands that I have found, which are Riveraholic ( www.riveraholic.com/MAIN.htm ), Power Pawz ( powerpawz.com/ ), NRS Propulsion Gloves ( www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2446&src=champ ) and Endorfin ( www.outdoorplay.com/store/Product.asp?CID=PW&SKU=APA_SLFIN ). If anyone has tried out 2 or more different hand paddles and would like to compare them to each other, that would be great.

P.S. does anyone know what kind of helmet the guy is wearing on the Power Pawz website?
