Opinions on a good paddle 16 years 4 months ago #24468

Well I'm wanting opinions on a good paddle that (obviously) doesn't cost too much, It will be used for river running/play boating, but I'm quite new to both, and will probably try and get one second hand anyway, but wanted some impartial advice on what is a very good value for money paddle, and which ones to defiantly avoid.

Thanks all
Richard

It doesn't seem like many people like Aqua-Bounds, but most people that I have seen paddle with Werners. I use the Desperado, which is a great paddle for only $170. What is your price range? An inexpensive option would be the NRS Propulsion Technologies PTK, which has a similar blade shape, but has an aluminum shaft coated with something that makes it feel almost as good as fiberglass, and has plastic/nylon blades. It is $55, but I have never used it, and have only seen it in 1 shop. Other good brands are Wavedog (wood paddles), AT Paddles, and Lendal, but I am probably leaving some out, as all the stores carry around me are Werner and Aqua-Bound.

Don’t go cheap on a paddle. My suggestion is to spend as much as you can afford on it. You don’t need to go high-end or even mid-end (unless you want to of course!). Remember that it is the one thing you are swinging around all day so weight is really important. I found lots of people would go cheap on their paddle and get one that was much too heavy and couldn’t figure out why they didn’t like paddling to much.

If you can, test drive a bunch of different models and lengths. Being a new beginner, you might not notice the subtle difference in blade shapes so to me length and weight are important to beginners then blade shape. Once you get better and notice the difference in blade designs, you can see off the blade or keep it as a spare.

Cheers,

David Johnston

For the cost, werner gives you great performance.. H20 paddles are also a good performer for the money.
However
Werner = carbon fiber
H20 = plastic

if you can afford one. AT paddles are much smoother than werner and H20 and give you same performance.

I'll be getting an AT paddle as soon as I can afford it.
