Cartwheel 16 years 1 month ago #25603

I am a large paddler (280lbs) who can get up to a bow stall really easy. My question is when i go to a cartwheel i can turn to stern really easy but when as i go back to bow my boat falls over onto me. I can finish the full turn when i am not very upright but not when my boat is at a 45 - 90 angle from the water. This is on flat water in a jackson super fun. Any help would be great!

Don't think it has anything specific to do with your size. I think the degree of the kayak is important, but also that you get a good body rotation.

I am not a playboat specialist, but I have practised this a lot, and are still struggling with the same as you.

The key is to keep your body wound up, always be leading with your head and keep on looking where you want to go...

if youre coming off a bow stall and fall over while on your stern (aka feet up the the boat falls on you)... you need to lean back, deeper into the water... If the boat is falling onto you after transitioning from stern going back to bow, Id think that your body position is behind the cartwheel

Id get a good playboating DVD like EJ playboatign basics and take it from there

Hope I helped a little

I have been trying to get my third end for a while now and i have read and asked people about this illusive link to do continuous cartwheels.
From what i have learned:
its all about body position
Winding your body up
leading with your head
making the boat rotate around you
use the legs to gain more momentum on to the bow
Not to allow the boat get too vertical 60 degrees ish
take your time do every thing smoothly
And not to forget reppition is the motha of all learning

I am still at it finding the perfect combination of these just waiting to do it not once or twice but three times in a row then i`ll sused it out.

help if you can please

Here I think you need to think about your posture, pre-rotating your body and edge transfers. try and sit quite neutrally to slightly forwards. Whilst cartwheeling keep your head and eyes focussed on a fixed point, and really open your body up ready for the next end with your head leading the rotation. A good exercise to do is 'lean cleans'- try EJ's playboating basics for this. If there are more problems post a video!

This video I made a while back might help a little:

haha, I wish I knew how to do a bow stall!
i cant even get up into onto the bow let alone try a cartwheel, but from what Ive heard its all about where you look

as you are rotating look over your shoulder to where you want to go and just use your paddle a little bit to help gain momentum

thats all i got tho
good luck! hope you get it soon!
