REALLY tall guy's kayak 16 years 3 days ago #26012

I've got a friend who is 6'7" -- 200 centimeters -- and he's interested in kayaking.

What kind of a boat do people recommend for someone this tall?

I have a Pyranha Ammo Large. I'm 183cm and have everything as tight/small as I can get it and it's still TOO BIG for me.

A friend of mine is a few inches taller than me and has a Pyranha Burn M. He wishes he had the Small. (They also make a Large burn).

A Pyranha Burn would be a good boat for a beginner I think, which would still be a decent boat once he got some skills up and started running harder stuff. Just see which size he fits best. But guaranteed he'd at least fit in most of the Large Pyranha boats. There's quite a few options out there for larger paddlers these days.

Good suggestion on the Pyranha, but I live in Texas, and unfortunately we have ZERO Pyranha dealers here. I don't think I've even seen one on local rivers. Too bad. . . .

What kind of boat does he want? If he wants a playboat, that could be tough, but for a river runner/creeker, it should be pretty easy. What kayaks are available in your area?

I am 189cm and I paddle the Fluid Nemesis M, granted that is bare foot and with almost no padding in front. A mate of mine has the Nemesis L and I can fit in with plenty foam in front and my normal work boots on, so lots of room!!

Fluid has always catered for a large range on paddler sizes.

Good luck finding the right boat.

Thanks for the bit about the Fluid boats. I have a large Fluid Spice. I'm 6'2" -- 188 cm -- and I just fit in it, and I can't really wear shoes in it, only booties. I'm pretty sure my friend who is 5 or 6 inches taller than me -- all in his legs -- would be a bit cramped even in the large Spice.

I'm 6' (183cm). I have a reasonably large foam block in my medium Spice. I tried a large Spice once, I felt like a kid inside that thing, it was HUGE... Maybe the large Solo too. I've got one and love it. Even the large Nemesis might be an option.

This dude here is 6'6" and in a large Nemesis:

Thanks for the suggestions.

Adrian, I appreciate the photo, but I have to say -- that guy looks like he'd be pretty uncomfortable after a couple of hours in that boat. . . . .

I know, it's a matter of fit for control vs. fit for comfort.

No worries. Well, most people aren't that comfortable in their playboats anyway. I seem to be lucky, I am. Must have short legs... The large Spice is huge, check it out. Creek boats always have more room, much more - large Solo. Otherwise the biggest creekers from Pyranha and Jackson should also be more than big enough for even the largest of beasts :)

I'm 1.91 and I have a large fluid flirt, which I love and is just the right boat for me. I have however had two people of about 2 meters (perhaps a bit more) try to fit in, they didn't. The tallest one could still squeeze in if he didn't mind sitting on the back of the seat rather than the middle, but the other one had huge feet and didn't fit at all. Also, this is quite a playfull boat, a beginner might be better of with more of a riverrunner, which are generally a bit larger inside.

I bought a large Fluid Spice because I like the river running style of boat, like a Jackson 4Fun, but I prefer the Fluid outfitting to Jackson's. I don't really like the rope-and-cleat stuff in the Jackson boats. I could never get the backband to stay in place, and there's something about ropes dangling in the cockpit that bugs me.

But I must say that the Jackson boats do seem to be more comfortable for one's feet, if you have fairly large feet. I can't wear sandals or water shoes in my Spice, only booties, and I can't do anything with my feet except jam them into the space available. Very little wiggle room.

That said, the Spice is a very fun boat, and my used one was about half the price of a Jackson 4Fun, a great deal.

Try the Dagger Agent 64, you'll be amazed of the space in that boat! I'm 1,90 m and had to put a big block of foam in the front!
