Newebie paddle choice? 15 years 11 months ago #26343

Hi

I've been paddling now for about a year, achieved 2 star... and thought its about time to get a paddle, could anybody point me in the right direction... think I've narrowed down to either the Robson Green or the Werner Sherpa both at 197cm.. I'm 5' 10" and paddle a LL Hoss... mostly paddle on the Thames (Chiswick) any info or advice will be greatly appreciated...

Both are good paddles, but i would highly reccomend trying as many different sets as possible.
Some other brands to check out are ophion paddles www.ophionpaddles.com (who just lowered their prices :) ), mitchell blades and H20's, all who probably have better designs than werner at the moment.

Thanks for the prompt reply, by your comments or lack of, I take it your not overly impressed by either Robson or Werner, I was impressed by the ophion paddles, but there's no dealers in the UK... and I would really like to see the real thing, but must admit they seem exceptional value, and look the dogs b's

I did paddle with werners for a bit, then i tried some other blades on the market and was blown away by how much nicer they felt to paddle with in (my opinion). But thats not to say the werners weren't good paddles.
In terms of ophion in the UK, they are currently only available (i think) directly through the ophion website.
Good luck with the paddling in the future.

I'm 5'10 and paddle a Werner Sherpa 191. It does me fine in my 4fun. I have the kind of big hands and still use the small straight shaft. Hope this helps.

Hi... Thanks for the advice, and responding, But, as an update, I've now gone for a Mitchell paddle, I've had a lot of valuable advice, all of which kinda of clouded the water (no pun intended)... but thats good, it needed to be done, anyways, hopefully should have the paddle in 4 or 5 weeks. What steered me towards Mitchell was the glowing reviews all over the place and the excellent reputation they've achieved and the fact you can have a custom paddle swayed it for me... Thanks for your help and everyone else who chipped in.

Special thanks to Tomthepaddle...cheers m8

What would you guys recommend in the way of paddle size for a slalom boat? (Just thought I'd jump in and ask for some ideas too!) ;)

Yes please do post a new thread, otherwise people browsing the forums won't pick up on your question by looking at the subject of this thread... Thanks, Adrian :)

i don't know if it available in the UK but you should add to your liste the select w1 ultra, it's a carbon kevlar construction, it's a really tough paddle because of ti's prepeg construction

Hi jimb

Thanks for the advice... bit, i've gone for the Mitchell Blade... really helpful when placing the order, and the fact is it's fully customised swayed my decision over others... personally, I found paddle choice the most difficult aspect of paddling... which I guess stands to reason... its You, Paddle and boat... in that order... so just take your time... and if you can.. try before you buy!

But in anycase, good like with your paddle hunt..
