Repainting your Kayak 15 years 10 months ago #26630

ive found this website,www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/

it sells spray paint that claims to fuse with the plastic, therefore should work with kayaks.

i was wondering if anybody had tried this, or whether people think it is a stupid idea.

any input would be greatly appreciated,
Jonathan :)

I've never tried painting a kayak but you'd have to make sure the paints waterproof

if anyone is interested i have found the uk version of krylon, it is called plasti-kote.
it is available from B&Q, Halfords and many other hardware retailers, for only £5.99 per 400ml.
im going to turn my red bliss-stick RAD either white, black, blue or yellow.
can't decide though.

The only problem is that it will wear off, if it isn't mixed with the plastic when molded. Also, check this out: playak.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&I...d=107&id=23878#23890

What do you mean when you say you have to mix it with the plastic

If you wanted it to be permanent, you would have to put the pigment with the plastic before the boat was molded. All rotomolded boats use a plastic powder first, which is then heated, and mixed through the mold. Once it is heated, it becomes a liquid, and once it cools, it solidifies. www.lvmvideo.com/quicktime/MakingAKayakPart1.mov

But as cjcc said you can't permanatly repaint a kayak as u can't re-liquify ur kayak unless u want a pool of melted kayak and even if u spraypainted it it would look newer to start with but it would soon wear off and the paint would fall of so it would probly then make it look shabby

I'm sure that if you could find paint that was the exact same, it would hide the scratches, but it would just wear off, unless it had something to bond to on the plastic, and even then, it would wear off. It wouldn't be worth the effort. You would be better off trying to trade your boat for a different color RAD, which you can get blue/white. They make a red/white/blue as well.

Plus consider all the toxic chemicals you'd be dumping into the water. :(

Another painting thread on a local SA forum that was started the other day:

Your warranty might be void if you paint your boat, think about it carefully... Contact your kayak manufacturer first, just to be sure :)

Re:Repainting your Kayak 15 years 10 months ago #26666

I'm not going to bother repainting it, it would take to much effort and would wear off.
but, thanks for the input anyway.

I'm having to sell my RAD now anyway as I've finally decided to start growing.

Re:Repainting your Kayak 15 years 10 months ago #26667

But this thread I think definitely touches on something important. Looks are important to most of us with regards to our boats. My wife, daughter and I were actually having this conversation while looking through surf shops at surf boards and all of the art on them this weekend. We kept agreeing that it would be really nice if we could get this on kayaks and if someone found a way to do it they would make a killing with kayaking of all kinds being such a fast growing sport. I know we're limited by the basics of the science of poly plastic, but even foam body boards come in all sorts of colors and graphics embedded. (Of course with fiberglass there are many more possibilities but we all know the story with the cost of glass and its fragile nature.).

Well, most surfers prefer plain white boards. And most of the dudes in Cape Town have plain ones. Although, of course, there are a couple of really smart looking ones around. On my bodyboard I've got a little alien that I keep up to date with wax (see below) But I still prefer my plastic boats plain.... :)

Not around here! I guess they're more 'posers' here in Florida! Check these out I actually see these in the line-up; but they cost more than the plain white ones):

Wow, some pretty cool designs on those surf boards. But I don't like those bodyboards. I ride a Nomad FSD Ultimate, pretty stoked with that :P

Re:Repainting your Kayak 15 years 10 months ago #26687

Neat thing about those boards is that they do not absorb water, they are nearly indestructible, they are super light, don't have the feel of toys, and are fast on steep waves. I body boarded for years and still have an old Turbo. My BB days are over though. I injured my back years back in a car accident and it has never been the same. Kayak surfing, stand up surfing, and maybe SUP will be how I play in the surf from now on. Caught a nice wave this weekend and my back killed until today. Funny, I kayak really hard in rough water but my back never bothers me. Totally different muscle group I guess.
