I recently got a paddle and due to its dark colour was told to cover it. Where is the best place to put something eg the blade or the shaft and what would be the best thing to use to brighten it up eg. tape or paint?? I thought tape may cause some sort of friction with the water? am i right or wrong?
Thanks
Saz

Never heard of that, but they might mean to put something on it so you can identify it, and so it is visible if it goes underwater. Some reflective tape in the middle of the paddle shaft should work fine, or right next to the blades on the shaft, depending on where your hands are on the paddle.

If you want to put it on the paddle, put it on the back of the blade so it won't wear off as easily.

People I paddled with insisted dark paddles were made visible and we used to use this. but to be fair when a paddle was lost it made no differance ;-)

yeah its just tape or something i need to put onto it to make it visible in the water. I was just wondering would it affect the performance of the paddle or something. I bought illuminous tape today and plan to stick it on!!

I just put pink duck tape on my paddle. Makes it easier to see in the water.

Totally agree  The best remedy is just not to let go of your paddle... ;) We've found paddles by searching around in a specific spot (low volume stuff) if we knew where the paddle went (roughly) but otherwise they either head downstream or they never surface. Last weekend I chased a boat for about 3km down a continuous river and eventually we lost it in a channel but the other guys found it later. I waited below the final rapid and somebody else's brand new Werner came floating down.... I believe the owner still owes me a case of beer B) You're either lucky, or you're not. I don't think tape will make much difference. Just my 2 cents ;)

well in the stuff im running/ doing a paddle will nearly always be recovered it is just something that needs to be put on to make it more visible. For example in the sluice which is a hole/wave near me after the wave there is not much flow so getting a paddle is easy but while in the hole if i let go i need to be able to see the paddle!
