Latex gaskets 15 years 10 months ago #26751

Hi,

Kinda new to dry tops, just received mine NRS flux all latex gaskets. Neck gasket was a bit harsh, got a bit of a rash now. Was wondering does anybody use any lotions around the neck to make it more comfy. Also would baby oil be o.k. to put on the neck a bit to stop the chaffing. Dont want to damage latex but i know its o.k. on neoprene.

Your body produces natural oils and when these are left on the latex seals for a long time they do a lot of damage. That's why people put baby powder on them, to absorb the oils and extend the life of the latex. So DO NOT put oil on them... :)

They do chafe. More so in salt water. After 2 or 3 days of paddling in the surf I look like a strangulation victim. Nothing I can really do. Wearing a surfers rash vest underneath and pulling it under the neck works, but then you let in more water ;) Always a trade off. On the river I don't have such a problem but consecutive days add up and a rash develops. Everybody has different skin too. Some people are like lizards and they feel nothing  hahaha

I've been told to use 100% silicone on the gaskets to make them last longer, but that stuff

a) expensive
b) a pain to put on as you are not supposed to put it on other fabric and takes forever

So do you recommend just some talcom powder instead then?? thats what swimmers use on their latex silicone swim caps

Yeah for sure. Get some... Super cheap. I will not help for chafe, but it will extend the life of your seals.

You can also get special stuff to put on the latex seals. a 'Seal Saver'. helps to lubricate and protect them. This will probably help reduce the seals rubbing you neck too. They are fairly cheep and you can abut at most diving shops.
