I can't tell if it's a river-wide hole, i have to check it out when i go upstate sometime, but does anyone know anything about the Au Sable river?

That looks like a low head dam to me. if that is the case, it is very dangerous. Talk to other boaters first.

sure looks like potentially dangerous. maybe at high water levels, if it looks like a wave, it may be fun, but whenever that thing looks like a hole, i wouldn't touch it!!!

make sure to check this sad story, which also explains this sort of dam in detail:

wow thanks for potentially saving my life. I didn't really know much about this sort of thing before now, as i am mainly a sea kayaker. Thanks, i'm glad i checked, can anyone possibly submit some photos of things i should try first, since i am somewhat new to playboating, before i try anything too crazy. Thanks in advance, and thank you for that article Jeroen

Is there a club around where you are? They are sure to know where the best spots are. Its hard to give advice over the internet.

btw if you look on the playak map:

playak.com/map.php?lat=44.5084209501&lon=-73.4753913249

you'll see that hudson river rafting is located right next to that spot. rafting companies typically employ good kayakers as well. give them a call or drop by, ask them about that spot, and get to know some interesting people in the process :)

that would not have the same dangers as a low head dam. I my understanding (which is probably not that good) the issue's with low head dams are, the falling water does not break up,Which creates an exceptionally strong hydrolic, and the uniform nature of the actual dam so the stopper and boil are entirely unbroken, meaning that there is no weak points to release a swimmer.

Oh, i understand. It entirely makes sense. The only thing is that on that page it says they went over a rope in the river, signaling danger ahead.
