One of the worst things about our great sport is getting to the river. My ideal would be a bicycle and trailer, but alas my closest rapid is 210 km away, and most others are considerably further (paddling purgatory). Environmentally less impacting, reliable, with some ground clearance for those nasty roads...changing attitudes like carpooling and paddling less/more selectively comes into play. What is the best vehicle for getting to the river (keep in mind that I live in western Canada)?

Honda CR-V is pretty nice in my opinion. Small engine, good ground clearance and its an suv so you can fit your kayak and equipment.

Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon! Add some Yakima shorties and that is the most fun you can have running shuttle in the mountains. All wheel drive, Turbo and a Wagon all in one! That is the way I do it. :)

I've got a 2009 Subaru Forester--great gas mileage; good clearance (I've taken it into some pretty burly spots); great cargo space inside and comfortable. I live in Montana and it handles the snowy roads like a champ. It's been a great car and I highly recommend it.

When I don't feel like strapping my kayak to the roof, it fits inside quite nicely (I have a Jackson Fun). :silly:

Any diesel or petrol car converted to bio fuel or LPG (if avaialble).

You can use any waste oil in a diesel once warm so you can split and have two tanks one for waste fuel one for normal diesel.

Subarus are one of the only manufacturers that support conversion to LPG (if available in canada) so you can have a quick fun vehicle that puts out less emission than a fiat punto 1ltr.

So really anything and if the environment is of concern use a good fuel source.

There was a vid made by patagoinia where they drove across the states in a huge SU converted to run on waste vegetabe oil, just cant find it now.

My ideal is a van with twin tanks to run normal diesel and waste oil, money and time does not allow at the moment.
