bow stall 15 years 8 months ago #27291

I have a couple of 9' rec yaks and was wondering if was possible to bow stall one of them. I realize that ww yaks can do the move no problem but is it remotely possible in a rec?

I've seen slalom boats do stern squirts and a few other of the longer styles. It might just be the nature of the river feature as well as technique. This was up at Maryland Chutes in the surf hole. Not so sure about the bow stalls though.

Slalom boats are made to be stern squirted. Most rec kayaks have way too much volume though. You might be able to ender in a big enough hole, but rec kayaks also aren't made to be rolled back up.

Trying to push rec boats where I think you are wanting to go is maybe asking to get into some real pig poo. I tried surfing my Otter XT. It can actually catch waves but when they get big enough the hull gets all frisky and looses it, especially in the broach at the end of the ride. Thing is, when one of these rec boats gets swamped enough water gets into the cockpit to sink a bay liner. And they want to head to the bottom. I've not yet seen a spray skirt that is worth anything more than keeping a light rain out for rec boats and once you start playing around with anything but flat water you start giving up any of the positive features of their hull designs. Better off trading one in and getting a play boat. (Slalom boats are not rec boats, so of course we aren't talking about them.)
