Burn or Karnali? 15 years 7 months ago #27776

Hey everyone, new guy here. Been paddling for 3 years, mostly playboating. I want to get more into creeking/big water paddling, so I'm in the market for a new creeker. I own a Pyranha Rev M, and like it so much that I want to stick with Pyranha (I've owned a Dagger Agent and Wave Sport EZG previously). Anyway, I have a chance to get either a new Burn or Karnali at a pretty steep discount.

My question is, which is the better boat in your opinion? I'm 6' 1" and weigh about 180 pounds, size 12 feet. Trying to stick with Pyranha here because of the good deal, so other companies' boats aren't really an option (I'm freakin' poor!) Which one would you rather have, and why? Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, the Karnali has a rounder hull and softer edges than the burn. And the ammo is more of a planing hull with harder edges (like your playboat). I'm pretty sure the burn is a little in between the ammo and the karnali.

I think it really depends what kind of rivers you are paddling, and your paddling style. For me, I have an ammo because I mostly paddle my plaboat. It's easier for me to jump into something with rails and a planing hull and paddle than to get a full displacement hull. Also the ammo has plenty enough volume for the rivers I paddle.

Just something else to think about. I don't know what sort of rivers you plan to paddle, but if you don't really NEED a full on creeker like the karnarli or burn, the ammo might be an option. If your paddling tight/technical stuff, something shorter that is easier to turn will make your life much easier.

Your best bet would be to demo the boats first if possible. If not, just buy one at a discount, if you don't like it, sell for profit or what you paid haha

The Burn has harder edges, and a displacement hull. The Karnali has a planing hull, but soft edges. The Karnali would probably be better for you, since it is more versatile (can surf big water, but won't get tripped up as easily as the Burn). I would wait for the new Burns that should be out really soon. Just out of curiosity, what is the difference in price for a Karnali, Burn, Ammo, Bliss-Stick SCUD, Mystic, Fluid Solo, etc.?

I would definitely take the Karnali over the Burn, just because if you're going to have a creeker, I would rather have one without edges, and it can probably surf better than the Burn. I would look at other designs as well though.

Cool guys thanks for the input. I'm moving up to the Hood River/Portland area within the next few months so whatever kind of creeking is around that general area. I guess what I'm trying to ask is what boat would be best for getting into creeking/big water stuff until I find what I like the most. Probably want something with edges since I've for the most part paddled playboats up until now, and that's what I'm most comfortable with.

Maybe I'll just wait until the new Burn comes out. I've also heard from a reliable source that they're redesigning the Rev, so I'll have to get one of those when they come out too! :)
