Hi all
I took a pasting yesterday and split open my strutter, has any1 else had this? basically i got flipped and i could feel my pfd and lid scraping the rocks under me but at no time did i hit my head hard. I rolled up got into an eddie and my mate pointed out a big split in my lid. Im not happy as you can probably understand, as they cost £120 a go. its more than a year old but until yesterday un-damaged. Suggestions any1? I suggest:
Be happy. The helmet did it's job. You did not lose consciousness and are alive  Now get another  My brother in law spent a month in a coma after a big hit to the head (motorbike). If he was wearing a cheap helmet, he probably would have died... Sweet helmets are great. I've never heard anyone fault them (although nothing in life is perfect and it's possible that it was a manufacturing fault - difficult to prove anyway) and have 2 myself. Contact Sweet, maybe there was a bad batch. It is possible. They will sort you out.Take it easy, Adrian |

Im sorry to hear about that, i guess when you put it like that i should be grateful. I think what im trying to say is that i was surprised that such a small impact cracked my lid, I know you do some creeking right? And you have 2 lids from sweet? have you ever damaged one? its just that the impact was under water and the river wasnt particularly fast moving so to split it would be hard as the friction through water is greater??? ive confused myself!  saying that i dont know if ive just cracked the outer skin and not the fibre underneath.I will email sweet and ask for there thoughts, and let you know how i get on. Hi Mat,
Hmmmm, sounds strange. The impact should have been hard. I had a solid knock on my Strutter once, had a headache for about 5 days afterwards. My Strutter is green and where it hit there were all these silver marks. But the helmet is rock solid still. I haven't really hit my Full Cut Rocker. I tend to paddle very conservatively and don't take too many risks In 2007 I went upside down through this nice little 3m waterfall that had another drop right in front of it which I messed up. That consisted of about 3 solid knocks, helmet was fine, only some tiny (silver again) scratches, also snapped and lost my paddle - oops:

So ive been in contact with Bjorn from sweet and i sent him some photos of my lid.
He asked me to send the lid into systemx kayaks the UK importer. Going to do that today. Its been a little drawn out because ive been in Lisbon for 10 days but hopefully they can have a look and let me know. Im kinda worried that there gona think i was doing a niagra falls like mission or summit! Those lids are expensive and i dont really wanna spend another £130 getting another. Here is the offending rapid anyway all be it a lot higher than it was a few weeks ago and not looking quite so viscious! I didnt end up swimming but ended up doing a couple of meters upside down. Hi Adrian didnt mean to be rude and ignore your post. I get it now paddle conservatively, if you ever need sum evidence to support that i will happily submit the playak tv vid of the zambezi. lol
If you did a drop upside down and had a headache for 5 days and your lid was unscathed im slightly more confident about mine being replaced. but not too confident. Is your lid the carbon weave type that you were talking about in another thread? because mine is not. Its only the peak that is carbon weave! Anyway fingers crossed. Matt |

Sorry matt but dont hold out too much hope, i know its not much fun but better your lid than loosing your personality from brain damamge.
Unfortunaltly really dont matter if your think you hit it hard or not, could just have been a pointy rock. I know it sucks and its expensive but thats just life as a paddler sometimes. I bought a kokatat gmer gore-tex suit for a stupidly large amount of money when a mate got pinned ran through a bramble bush then ripped a hole doing the rescue, 700 quid down the drain, one mate alive an kicking. Know which I would rather have... System x are very fair, take what they offer you and try to stay up right |

[/quote]LOL I did try i promise No i know im probably hoping a bit but ive just sent it off and it should be there tomorow lunchtime. I feel bad for your £700 drysuit thats really gotta sting! Not as bad as when I stacked my motorbike with third party only insurance, that was a few K gone and a broken neck to boot

The headache was from another rapid. The waterfall in the picture hurt a bit, but not too bad! Haha! Mine is the carbon one...
Good luck. And if those are your mates on the video, tell them to lift their feet when swimming!!! |

Im getting a new one!!!
 The guys at system x received it this morning and had a look. Here is the interesting bit, It dosent look like impact damage!? They said it looks like there has been pressure put on it and its cracked. They were also quick to point out that this might not be the case but that its not safe to use again!  Ive said that with my new 1, i will only wear it in the house! Ive got to say a big thank you to nick at system x for being so helpful. so thank you nick. Im now happy again. Matt |
