Kayak-some sort of pedometer? 15 years 6 months ago #28087

Hi. Besides using an expensive GPS, how could I measure the distance traveled when paddling a kayak? Thank you.

If you know where you are, and where you've come from and gone to, you can use Google Earth. It has a handy ruler function that allows you to follow paths/rivers/etc. as multiple points and as long as you click, click, click, it racks up the accumulated distance. Very handy. Where you move your mouse, it allows give the height above sea level. Useful for finding gradients of rivers... :) Try it, let me know if you need help.

I have already thought of using Internet back home. I was wondering if there are any tools or electronic devices that can be used to measure the distance traveled when paddling (in real time).

I don't know. But GPS's are really cheap these days..... Look around. I'm quite sure that any other system will be less accurate, more cumbersome to use and possibly install, and probably cost as much, if not more, than a simple GPS.

Here's an idea...we'll see if it works. I'm trying to think about this as I type it out...It'll take some math, but should work...maybe.

Measure your boat in feet. Pick an object in the river, like a rock or a shrub on the side of the river. Once the tip of your boat crosses the object, start your timer. When the very end of the stern crosses the object, stop your timer. This will give you the amount of time it takes your boat to travel a boat length.

Divide the boat length (ft) by the number of seconds it took you to pass the object. This is the number of feet your boat travels in a second. Multiply by 60 for the number of feet your boat travels in a minute. Multiply by 60 again for the number of feet your boat passes in an hour. (Is this working, so far?)

Divide that number by 5, 280 for the number of miles you will travel in an hour. This should, by my reckoning, give you a rough idea for each trip of how many miles you travel. The object measurement should be done each time you get on the river because of the variances of river speed. If you need the measurement in nautical miles, divide by 6,076ft instead of 5,280.

Does this make sense? Or am I going mad?

Of course, this was in miles/feet--do the proper conversions to get meters/km. :cheer:

Hi everybody, first time poster here. I’ve been using a pedometer by Telenav . It is really useful to me because I can see other people’s bike routes and the best part is calculating the calories I can burn. ( see it here: maps.telenav.com/tnmap/). Just wondering if anybody has a calorie counter they recommend?
