Well I think you should have a descent breakfast/ meal and good food along the way. Only sugars that are taken up quickly won't last you out the trip. Food is one thing but I think most paddlers who think they're hungry are actually lacking water.... In my experience paddlers are ignorant about the intake of enough water during kayaking. This sets your performance back the most...

Fruits (dried or fresh) ok and contains lots of natuaral sugars that wil enhance your performance for a short while, but drinking water gives the most benefit....

I think the key to an energy filled day is to begin with a carbohydrate filled breakfest e.g porage or brown bread i should know i'm a diabetic (type 1) so this is vital because carbohydrates give slow release of enery threw out the day.
i agree with Fwag that dried fruit is just a short burst of energy but combine this with a sandwhich it is very effective. Lastly Fwag is right again that sayin water is more important it give the body about 10% of the bodies energy foog give about 5% and air about 85%( i'm not completely sure about those figures)

Hope this helps and i don't mean to crush WilliH2O's forum because fruit is very effective.

No harm done at all - a great exchange of information .
Nothing beats starting out the day with breakfast along with being hydrated
- before ,during, and after, training
I prefer eating something than sucking down a packet of Gu, Gel, etc.
Most processed power bars use cheap soy fillers to stretch out the good ingredients anyway.

Living in the Western Cape our runs are short, so no food usually. And one can drink the water direct, which is a bonus. But when I was living and paddling elsewhere in South Africa I'd have to paddle with usually about 3 litres of water with me. Later, I just took a 1 litre bottle and used 1 pill to make the water safe to drink, worked well. ;) Even though it was still a bit sandy :side:

Snacks for me are usually peanuts and raisins, tuna and a tin or two of sardines. Yum, yum!  Sucks being allergic to sugar... That dried fruit would take me down.

Lots of water - and in some cases energi drinks. Peanuts and raisins are also good. When paddling in Iceland the best energi source for me is an old traditional thing called "lifrarpylsa", which means liver sausage. It may sound disgusting, but it sure does work - packed with carbo, fat and all the lovely stuff that makes us tick :P

I am 2nd generation in USA with parents direct from Germany.
My father made plenty of Liver Sausage directly in our kitchen when I was a young kid.
Organ meats have tons of vitamins and minerals - good stuff indeed !
