riot air 60, 90 kg, is the boat to big for me? 15 years 6 months ago #28179

Hi all

Im looking to buy a second hand full on play boat, however i do have trouble fitting in quite a few of them.

Well anyway, i ended up buying a Riot air 60, but from looking at it, it looks very large and quite high volume for a play boat.

At the moment i have a dagger juice 7.1, so i am going to use that for comfort trips and river running/play. But really want a full play boat that i can cram into and take to the Themes Valley Wiers.

Is the riot air 60 to similar to my juice? Should i sell it on and try and find a smaller one.

I am 90kgs/198lb.

cheers

lucas

Hi

I wouldnt be too quick to sell it. give it a chance. Your in the middle of the weight range for it so you shouldn't have too much trouble doing your "thang" in it. It is an out and out playboat and alot shorter than your juice, which is an allrounder.

I weigh about 100kg(depends when i have a nice food day), im 6'3" and i have just bought a medium fluid nemesis. Im about 10-12kg over the limit with my gear on and the few times ive paddled it since i bought it its been fine. What im trying to say is its personal preference. I had a large playboat before that yes was more roomy but was harder to throw around. My new one still has enough room(otherwise i wouldnt be in it) all be it not as much as the larger size, but so far i prefer it.

Give the air a chance, if you dont like it or cant get on with it try something else. You may find it harder to "throw down" than something smaller but they obviously do test the boats with a variety of weights in them.

Happy testing

Ola.
Riot air is a good kayak especially on waves. It was designed more with wave play in mind rather than in a hole.
If you have access to waves or breaking waves I would say give the air a chance and a half.
Being in the lower end of the weight range = more retentive in holes, rails higher out the water so less chance of catching edges but also means that you will have to edge harder for serious carve and release effect, slightly more difficult to get moves done on flatwater. The other great advantage of being in the lower end of the weight range is that it will force you to get your technique down properly as you will be less able to muscle out moves.

If you do not get joy from it after several sessions then try and sell. Good playboats to try out Fluid Nemesis and Riot Astro, the blisststick smoothy also looks sweet but I have not paddled one yet.
