well it sounds to me that you need to sort your head rotation out when you make the move look were you want your nose to go also use body rotaion really over exgarate them
and stalls keep lots of small movemnet with the blades and bury your body further down
good luck

third end:

im no expert, but try this...

I'm going to assume you cartwheel to your left because that's how most of the people I know cartwheel (except fro weird me). To get to your stern you most likely just finished off a right-handed forward stroke (unless you're doing cleans). So, after that keep your momentum going by looking again to your left and set up for your next left-hand backstroke. As your left knee re-enters the water use that backstroke just like you do in the second part of your initial double pump. The momentum really plays a huge part in keeping everything going.

to stall:

ok this may sound weird but it worked for me...

Do your double pump, and get vertical. Make sure your paddle is parallel with the water. Then, try to kind of catch the water with your paddle; almost as if you're going to start pumping for a flatwater loop. This should force you to stabilize yourself and will make holding the stall easier. Once you've done that keep your weight centered by placing your head just above the water and looking straight out. If you start falling forward bury your head in the water and focus on bringing your knees up. If you start falling backward try to stand up and focus on pulling your knees back. Stalling takes alot of tedious practice, but once you've got it it's uber fun to do.

The biggest thing is going to be what's right for you. I had like 20 people talk to me about cartwheels, before it finally clicked. Try watching someone else do it as well, see what they're doing and try to look like them.

let your hed lead the way when catwheeling and make sure your bdoy weight is centred. When bow stalling remember to lean right forwards with your blades well submerged.

Sounds like your not using ur head and weight to lead. A soon as you get that nose end in the air use ur body to bring the nose down to the left or right. (depending on which way you cartwheel) Do this without dropping ur body weight too far back which will result in you flopping back over, which sounds like whats happening.
Once you get up on ur end a lot of the work is done using ur body weight.

Don't give up!

I haven't read all the replys, so it might have been mentioned already, but edge transition plays quite a big role in cartweeling. ken whiting has this playboating dvd that helps a lot with all the move stuff. and remember, your kayak follow your head, so look into the direction you want your yak to go.
enjoy

Stay looking forward and lead with your head like you are in a hole. Also, keep your weight forward. Hope this helps.

A useful way of seeing what you do wrong is to video yourself cartwheeling and from reviewing the video see what you need to change.

Apart from the remarks about your head leading the way you probably do the same thing wrong as I do: you have to keep your paddle parallel to your boat when double pumping and cartwheeling. I make the mistake of having it at an angle which leads me to either fall over on my face or drop back on my butt.

Once you've got your paddle position sorted, get on with the head leading the way thing :D

I'm working on that too ;)

Ha, I've nailed it! A team member of the Dutch Junior Freestyle Squad showed my mistake: when lifting my bow I tended to do a high brace which placed my paddle in an angle to the boat. Basically all you have to do is make a regular stroke parallel (and close) to your boat, edge the boat, slam it down and presto: a bowstall without problems!

If you do the \"look behind you\" thing and keep your head leading the way cartwheeling is easy. I managed to throw my boat around without any problems once I got that paddle position correct.

Thanks, I will. Too bad my pool sessions are almost over and the water outside is still cold but then again, the people in my neighbourhood already think I'm a madman because of my freestyle attempts :bounce:

I finally got round to putting this up on Playak:

playak.com/media.php?src=dmlkZW9zL1RlY2h...IFRyZWdvbmluZy53bXY=

It's some old footage I put up. Note how long the paddle is that I'm using. Jeepers, it's about 201cm.. :| I guess so much for people always telling other people that you can't cartwheel with a long paddle.

Enjoy. Hopefully it's useful.. :roflol:

Hehehe, different strokes for different folks. My H20-2 is 197cm and my H20-Team is 194cm. I still like them slightly longer than most people I know. Nice one Nathan
