Boat Advice 15 years 5 months ago #28425

Hello Paddle people
Ive been kayaking for about 3 years now doing mainly white water rivers in the UK but with some surf trips and bigger water in France thrown in for good measure. Ive been paddling mainly Pyranha H3 and Pyranha Ammo borrowed from the club im with and have decided its time to buy my own boat.
Heres where the advice bit comes in. im looking for a boat that will challenge me a little but unsure of whether to go for a river runner with some play or something with extra volume for running the bigger water. An upcoming trip to Austria and Slovenia to run the rivers out there is also a factor. So far i was thinking along the lines of:
Liquid Logic Hoss

Wavesport Diesel 75
Big Dog Flux Large
or possibly a Big Dog Force

Im a shade under 6'0" and have big legs and weigh around 78kg any advice you guys could give me would be much appreciated.

Seems like if you have been boating the Pyranaha,s and have been happy with them, why change?
Instead of finding a boat that challenges you look for more challenging water and on home runs find creative lines.
I think If your heading on a road trip, as it looks like you are planning , a familiar boat and gear are key.

Greetings from Portugal.

Like the previous kayaker said... you should go on something thet you're familiarized with.

All the kayaks that you are thinking of buying are prety similar, even on the design, except one of the Big Dog's.

when I started to paddle, when i was 12, pyranha was not at all one of my favourite boats, but they have improved a lot. And now i think that it's one of the best kayaks in the market.

So i think you're doing a great decision between AMMO and BURN. But it all depends on what kind of rivers you're doing. In my case... i really need Magnum from Riot.

But if you want an advice... don't spend all you're money on the boat. Buy really good gear, becouse the gear will be useful for under any circumstances.

Have a nice trip, and if you need something we will be here.

I just fancied a bit of a change from the Pyranha boats. the road trip is not till the summer so ill have plenty of time to familiarise myself with a new boat. i do have some pretty decent gear just need a new helmet and a paddle if you guys have any suggestions for either?

Howdy doody.

Im in the market for a jackson super hero at the moment, advertised as a river runner/creeker. I like the idea that i can do some steep stuff as well as tootle down the local runs. I paddle a fluid nemesis at the moment, obviously its a fair bit of work if i do a long paddle in it and it gets a little uncomfortable too. In an ideal world id have a creeker, river runner and a playboat but as it isnt i have to compromise. Obviously lots of manufacturers do river/play boats. fuse, ammo, fun. etc etc. I have paddled a hoss and although it was alright, i didnt find it as fast as others.

I want to keep my out and out playboat because thats what i enjoy the most. Then get the super hero to do a bit of both. I suppose you have to decide what you like to do more and then compromise on the other stuff. so if creeking is your thing for example get say a dagger nomad and then a wavesport fuse for river running and a bit of play/surfing.

Paddle and lid wise. I have an AT2 bet shaft and love it. have also had a set of schlegals(years ago) a set of Lendals and some gorillas. Liked them all though the schlegals were very heavy compared to newer carbon fibre paddles. Ive heard bad things about Lendal since they moved to the states but have no 1st hand experience as mine were from scotland. Obviously you have to consider Werner but there is also the likes of H2O, Rough stuff and Robson. I have a sweet lid and like the fit and look. Also they are super helpful if something goes wrong, as are system x the importers in the UK. Bit pricey i know but a friend has a shred ready and prefers my lid for the fit and comfort.

Hope it helps

Excelent choice, Werner and Shred Ready. But some other paddles, there is a huge market of paddles.

Ginga... are you a dealer of the dagger company??!!:P :P

AT, Wave Sport and Dagger are all from the same company.

Nomada

Ive never had either SR or werners so couldnt say personally. Im definately not a dealer, would be nice to have a shop one day. little retirement project. :)

I didnt know that wavesport and dagger are the same company, i thought that dagger were the european dealer for wavesport? but had no idea that AT were anything to do with them.

Obrigado, boa noite

Ive managed to find a really good deal on a Pyranha Burn, bit of a departure from the boats i was looking at but thought if i can get one on the cheap might aswell give it a try. what u guys think?

Well... i like the Pyranha Burn.
They have really "nice" boats. I really like the design of them, and i have tested some of them and i've liked them.

Tou have to take in consideration your weight, if your a bit heavy you should go for a Pyranha Karnali

The problem is the thickness of the plastic. If you'll go for rocky rivers... you should be carefull there.

but i still thinking that it is a really nice boat. :)

Dude

Not to disagree with Nomada but my friend paddles a burn L he is a big ish guy and thats the only boat he paddles and indeed owns.

He does abit of creeking in it, river running obviously, and a little surfing. We took it to blackrock sands, Wales in the sea and it did fine. obviously your not going to get into the small holes that you would in a little boat but it surfs ok on the standing wave at the Treweryn.

Like i said before you have to decide what type of paddling you want to do.

My friend has done some quite hard water in his and its not got any major dents or dings. never paddled it myself apart from the lake but he has no complaints. Dont know much about he quality of pyranha but they cant be that bad as they have a lot of admirers.

hey guys. found a really good price on the burn (£660) so gunna go for that. had a try of it on some flat water and seems like a pretty top boat. Thanks for all your advice.
ive posted a new thread concerning paddles if you have any additional thoughts there.

Ginga, man... don't take me wrong, pyranha, in my point of view, might be the better designed boats on the market.
The thing is... the plastic is thin, but the design is one of the best. I've tried them and seen them in action.

Their very good on the river, but the materials their made of make me wonder.

Greetings to every one.

I´ve been giving my H:3 a beating for quite some time now, and it just holds like there´no tomorrow. So I definitely don´t agree with you on Pyranha´s plastic. In fact, I totally disagree with you on that.

I agree, the plastic on my Pyranha ammo seems pretty decent.

I wouldn't say that Riot is any better. As far as plastic reputation, it seems to be Eskimo, Prijon, maybe Dragorossi, Fluid, LL, Jackson, Dagger, Pyranha, Wave Sport, Riot over here. Wave Sport has gotten better though. The only problem with the Jacksons is that you can't weld them easily because they are crosslink, where everything else is HTP or linear.

I also have a Prijon Cross, which is solid as a rock B)

Yeah sold my riot, I didn't like the plastic on it at all. I have not paddled a Prijon, I've heard their plastic is good, but I don't like their kayak designs. Any other questions?
