Getting back into kayaking 15 years 4 months ago #28504

Hi all,

Hoping for a couple of pointers about boats. I've just started back paddling after 5 years or so off, bought a dagger outlaw.

I have run a couple of grade II/III rivers with it lately and done plenty of surfing with it in the sea. However I have a bit of a problem.

I am finding it quite unstable on the river, especially when it's in spate. I seem to have real issues with the back end in stoppers and difficult eddies.

Now I am a bit rusty but not that much I think and this boat seems to have given me pause for thought and made me a bit nervous in bigger water.

Has anyone else had this problem with the dagger outlaw? The back end seems to be almost under the water all the time and the boat seems a bit slow to paddle?

Any advice? Does/has anyone else had the same issue or do I have a fundamental issue with technique?

I can roll ok, surf etc just seem to be really uncomfortable in this boat. I am fitted in it quite well no real issues there.

Cheers,

Guy,

I can't give you any advice on the dagger outlaw or any of the issues you are seeking answers on (I hope others chime in to help for sure), but I can advise you on this--don't ever leave kayaking again. There's nothing better out there! Life doesn't get simpler or better than being in a small boat with a paddle and your destiny in your own hands.

Peace and good luck!

I never paddeled the outlaw my self, but I know a guy who did. He is a small guy and could paddle the biggest waters with ease in it. What I gather from your post is that either you are to heavy for the boat, I think the suggested paddler weight of 66-100 kg is a bit optimistic on the heavy side, or you need to move your seat forward.

This is a thin and slicy boat so there is always a good chance the back end will be pulled by the water. This is no Dagger Centrifuge so the back, or front, end should not always be submerged :)
