THe Squashtail is a pretty cool boat. its really fun for shredding river waves. if your looking for ocean surf you'd probably want something longer. i use both the squashtail and the thruster from DR, and i'm stoked with both. i'm 6' and 180 and the ST is a bit tight inside for me. my legs will fall asleep within about half an hour, but i'm not that flexible either. i'f you're a little shorter it should fit you fine. and the edges on it arent as bad as they look, both for surfing and paddling. you just need to be aware of them.
My favorite boat is the thruster though. if you're my size or bigger go for that. its RAD! its got a similar hull to the ST, with hard edges for carving, but more rocker for bounce. it really does it all, surfs fast, carves hard, and boosts airs. also nice and comfy. other spud boats just really dont compare when it comes to surfability.
the outfitting in older DR's isn't anything special, its more up to you to make it custom. but the new outfitting looks really nice. cloth covered padding and a new backband.

-i'm not sure where you're located, but if your are ever in washington state i can let you try mine.

Cheers

You should rely try it before you buy it, if you can. I bought one in 2007, the model with all the fittings and stuff included. This is my review.

I am 178 cm 70 kg, and this boat was not comfortable for me. None of my friends could get in it :) The sticky back band is a cool idea, but it was to give rely good support. In the end it just more or less stuck to my but. The plastic things that hold your thighs are always in the way when you get into and out of the boat, they put my legs to sleep so in the end I took them out and put normal fittings. The snowboarding things for the back are not so well located either. And the food pegs do not give solid support.

Paddling wise. The edges of this boat will not go unnoticed, but if you are careful while paddling it's not a problem. I was either paddling this boat or a creeker and had to get used to the edges all the time. Not too bad, just made me remember to stay in a strong paddling position. For me the boat was a bit hard to roll. I think this was because of my lousy technique and the boats more or less square shape and high side walls. My friends, who managed to squeese in, also had a hard time rolling it.

Because of the boats funny shape it does not stack well with other boats. So it was always a pain to put it on a roof rack on a car. Sure it looks good to hold it on the side when you are biking to the beach but if you are serious about moving around with it get extra straps.

...but if you get the chance to surf this boat on a wave you will forget the sleeping legs, back band pushing your butt, and all that and just surf. Compare to a Dagger kingpin or other bouncing boats this one surfs so smoothly. It's amazing how it just glides on the waves.

In the end I sold mine and was happy I still had my old trusty Kingpin :)

Conclution:
try it
surf it
make your own fittings
as a general play run river runner, probably not the best boat you get

Two types of outfitting setups now

The original is now called the "elite" outfitting:
that is the one with the super stiff and sticky backband, choice of three different thermoformed seats, and thigh wings on the inside of your thighs instead of knee braces.

The newer (and less expensive) outfitting version is called "performance" outfitting:
It is a rotomolded seat (one size) with a traditional cordura covered ratcheting backband
the inner thigh hooks can still be added because the seat has the inserts for them, but it does not come standard

Two totally different outfitting experiences

The Squashtail is NOT just a surf machine. It cartwheels well and loops, so will do all the modern park n play moves.

If you are in the U.S. I can probably find you one: new or used
