PFD Help 15 years 2 months ago #29042

Hey guys and gals,

I'm taking a job this summer as a river guide on the Ocoee in Chattanooga, TN and decided it was time to invest in a nice PFD that won't encumber my movements. I'm a small guy, 125 lbs and chest is about 38", and my shoulders aren't very broad. Anyone have a brand name or specific design that they've been impressed with and fits well? Please let me know if you get a chance.

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a basic PFD that fits well, look at the Astral Willis hands down. If you want a rescue PFD, I would look at the Extrasport Pro Creeker, Kokatat Ronin Pro, Astral Green Jacket, and the Stohlquist Descent. There are a few others, but they are not USCG approved and could lead to issues on USFS-owned rivers. The Green Jacket has the least bulky fit, and all the others are fairly similar (side entry, zipper, zippered pocket). I have the Pro Creeker but like the Descent more because of the throw bag pocket on the front.

If you only plan on being on big-water rivers (New, Gauley, Nanty, Ocoee) I would go with the Green Jacket. I didn't really like the pullover design, but it all comes down to personal preference. I just liked the side entry because it was easier to get on and off, but the pullovers are generally more comfortable.

If you can, go to the Nantahala Gorge and stop by NOC and Endless River Adventures. Last time I was there (July-ish) NOC had the PeakUK River Guide, as well as the full Astral line, and ERA should have the full Stohlquist line. I have not seen an Extrasport Pro Creeker or Kokatat Ronin Pro in a store anywhere in NC (checked in Asheville, Boone, Charlotte, Nantahala, and with stores in the triad area and most other big cities west of Charlotte). Another store I would check with is Rock/Creek.

My choice is the Kokatat Ronin Pro. Try one on...you'll love it. I'm sure your new company will require you to have a type V rescue vest....if not, look for work somewhere else.

I have several Astral Aquavest 300's left, that would be my choice. Shoot me an Email at [mail address protected from spambots with javascript] or call 1-888-437-2077 and we could discuss a few options.
