I have a hf 20m long. it is the best I have tried, the line never gets cought on the bag and it´s easy to pack.

i use green slime they are the best i have come across! Personally i do not like the palm bags as they tend to get caught up in the bags as they make the bags too small for the amount rope they use also they tend not to pack well or the rope falls out in your boat wrapping itself round your legs.

I use a 20metre rope for most things 25 is finr for bank rescues such as live bait, z drags etc! i only know 1 person can throw a 25 m bag + most river swims are going to be under 20 metres from the bank in the uk anyway

Yea i think 20 meters equals 60 feet (i think) yea i carrry around a 20 foot rope cause i am less aqurate(wow i suck at spelling) farther away and i havent paddled a river more than that yet and all you have to be able to do is throw half way across. cause your person should be always on the same side as you (i said should not is)

On a river you should always have a throw bag.

On the sea (or large lake) you should always have a tow line.

There is absoloutely no reason not to take one. "Playboating" is not a reason neither is "I've lost mine" or "I can't afford one".

Personally I've used a 20m bag for a long time and it works well. AND sometimes you do have to throw a line all the way accross the river (pins and entrapments?!).

The kernmantel floating ropes that are being sold more and more is what I'm using now as it's much stronger that the normal braided Polypro. Have a look at the HF range of bags if you don't know what I'm on about. In the USA they use spectra kernmantel ropes which are super strong for a throwbag.

8mm diameter is the thinest line I'd use and not more than 10mm or it gets too bulky to throw a long distance.

Be safe out there,

Neil

Unless a person is scouting every rapid and setting safety a throw rope does little good. Especially in long rapids that are obstructed by rocks. I can't see many people poping their skirt in a rapid to get a throw bag. I haven't run any super nasty stuff but I have always basicaly done the old read and run tactic, know a basic idea of where to go. Also, there is a risk of getting tangled in the rope. I feel like once you're sliding down the tongue of a rapid it's mainly your own resposablity to save yourself. Hopefully you;ll have a buddy at the bottom to collect your crap.

during a a class 5 rapid you need throw ropes. and i have been surfing waves and been saved by a rope. if the guy didnt have the rope i would have been worked in the hole for a long time.

A throwbag is a must even on easy rivers. They are a popular piece of kit for a reason! I have an 18 metre (60ft) palm bag which is long enough for most jobs (in Scotland) and doesn't take up too much room. I quite like my boating partners and would like to be able to help them if they got in to trouble.

I picked up a stolhquist 50 footer (~25 m) for 30 bucks on sale...chea.
Really though, a throw bag is essential especially in smaller groups or on rivers where a chase boater is impossible or impractical.

I do try to remember my throw bag whenever possible but do make sure a knife goes hand in hand with a rope!

If you carry a rope you always carry a knife.
