Hand paddles are fine as long as you are happy using them! some arent def worth practisin! I carry mine if im soloin or carry a lendal 4 way split with a paddlock system just as stiff as a normal paddle!

Handpaddles.. trust me if you're in that situation you will learn. But you should try and use them if they are going to be your back.

I've got splits but don't always paddle with them. Depends how hectic the river is, or how remote. Rivers in deep gorges are not easy to climb out of..........

I was very glad for the backup paddle my guide had on him when I lost paddle and still had a technical rapid to get through. Luckily for me the people sitting at the bottom of the rapid saw my paddle come through and grabbed it.

i keep a pair of nrs pulpolsion gloves in my pfd pocket i just considerd those have paddles, that way i wont lose them
