if you got access to a vacuum molding machine make a template out of wood and then put ppacky on give it a try may ba a bit thin tho!

or get some thickish acrylic? heat till mallable put beween a jig made out of 2 pieces of wood screw together wait till cold to remove make it slighlty bigger tha your cockpit and trim back to fit.

Or my friend has carved one out of Closed cell foam easier to make just electric bread knife sand paper?

i havent tried any of these yet but all should work depending on what machinery you can get hold of.

Let us know how you get on. :cowboy:

i found the easiest thing to use is just a plain five gallon plastic pail. the plastic is sturdy and malleable enough to shape. an industrious and frugal friend even made hand paddles from them. the vacuum method is nice but who has access to a machine like that? also attach some foam to keep it from sinking. one last option is a beach ball, less than a buck and it works great, except it seems to put your legs to sleep really fast. hope it helps!

The use of a beach ball is a VERY BAD IDEA!!!
If you have a beach ball wedged between your legs, you will not be able to exit your boat in an emergency, as when your upside down - the ball will trying to float - trapping you in your boat.

Mini cell foam works well and it floats! it just takes ages to shave and sand to fit to your boat perfectly!

i have personally found that stretching clingfilm over the front cockpit area, then applying some firbeglass. this makes th perfect fit, its strong and foam can be glued to the top for custom fit if needed.

could anything really be any simpler :ask:

Hi
I used a plastic called Pet G Vivac. It looks like perspex but is much more mouldable.
I got a 1 foot by 2 foot peice popped it in the oven for a couple of mins till it got plyable then with an extra set of hands pressed it to my kayak cockpit.
Trimmed off the edges and ended up with a very profesional looking over thruster.
The advantage Pet G has over perspex are .
1. It floats perspex doesn't
2. It can be moulded to have several bends at lower temp.

It cost me about 20 euros for 4 foot by 2 foot as everthing is a rip off in Ireland at the moment but my self and a friend ended up with over thrusters for a ZG and a Chronic that look and work sweet .
My local hardware gave me the address of the plastic supplier which was pretty local too.
Hope this helps.
Bren

I personally use a beach ball, but am getting one of these , becasuse it was cheap (garage sale) and my balls keep popping. Would you say this was dangerous too? I havnt found beach balls dangerous yet, but i dont play on very big water which could well be why...

If you have an old worthless boat lying around (like one with a serious leaking problem or something) you can cut a piece of plastic out of the sidewall. It works best with a displacement hull boat so you can cut in a place where the curve matches that of your cockpit. then you can glue some foam on top for a little extra volume if you want to. (You can also make hand paddles like this for anyone who is interested)

Hey guys.
I think the best idea is buy the IR overthruster. It adds 3 gallons to your boats volume and floats. And is only about £10. I have one. But i did make one out of acrilic but when i rolled over the over thruster hit somthing a splinterd and gashed my legs (acrilic is too britle). The IR is the best. Unless like the other guy said you have a old boat...............(By the way when my home made one broke i had to go to hospitle and had 20 peces of the plastic out of my leg and had 16 stitches) DONT DO IT IF YOU CAN AFFORD THE REAL THING. :cursing: :anger:  :skull:

The IR overthruster costs 40 euro's overhere. And if you know a thing or two about composites it's easy to make one yourself (for a lot less than 40 euro's ...)

BTW: if you manage to find one for a Fluid Flirt Medium for 10 pounds you can sell it to me. ;)

R U sure about the price? The IR site has it at 40$ US. If it's really available for 10 pounds - I want one. :)
Where did U buy?

Hey guys.
In south Africa you get this type of perspex, my dad says it is plastic, or something, which you can buy at any local checkers or pick & pay. it is actually used as a cutting board for veggies and stuff. it is about 1 cm thick and strong enough for an overthruster. I made some kayak fins out of this \"perspex\" as well.
It cost about R30, 3 euro+-. cut out the shape u want and then put on some foam. i have 1 hole left infront of my thihg braces so i shaped the \"plastic\" that i use a screw to keep it in place. It woeks quite well and haven't had any problems with it yet. Funny thing is i have this overthruster but can't loop. Go figure. here is a pic.
