strapping boats to roofs 19 years 1 week ago #5535

hey all, about half an hour ago a friend and me were driving when we heard a bang, we turned to see both our boats bouncing down the road at 50mph. luckly we did'nt hit anyone or any other car, but it was a very close call since we had just been travelling at 70 on a very busy road!
so you guys got any advice about securly fastening boats to a small roof or have any similar stories?
we put our boats (a riot air and pyranha s6f) on their side next to each other with cockpits facing inwards and nose to tail. people have sugested stacking them, but they just don't sit ontop of each other well.
thanks for any help![/b]

a non failure method at any speed is to use the front/back loops...thus

throw 'em on, loop over the middle tie em tight...then secure the thing with a rope through each of the boats handles/loops/holds and tie em down to the roofrack...

make sure that you lock the rope when it travels through the loops (thus avoiding sliding of the boats sideways)...

so always use the handles...and it will be impossible to fall off...!!

shouldn't be a difficult task...but should be done properly once youstart travelling with speed..:)

You should buy a Kayak Rack. Well worth the money spent.

You needn't spend the cash on kayak specific brackets, but do get good cross bars and you will be OK.
Get straps with locking cams (see NRS.com or the like).
As other poster advised, make sure to loop them through something permanent (like the rescue handles) on your boat.
Plastic Kayaks can take a bit of flexing, so don't be afraid to strap them down tight, it shouldn't hurt your boat (don't go nuts, but snug, with some flex will hold well, and not damage your boat).
I prefer to place two boats side by side, cockpits down, and then wrap the straps over, under and then through my loops...
Just be sure to take the time and BE SAFE.
Cheers!

If the boats not fit together well and they slip when you tight the straps you should try to put an extra strap through the security bars to fix this problem.

thanks for all the help guys, some of the stuff does seem pretty simple but its amazing how idiots like us missed them!
i think we've learnt out lesson, not to rush it and ensure they can't come off even if they come loose, like by looping through the handles.
thanks!

Dont worry try padding your rack aswell as up rights as plastic just slips on roof bars using uprights you should have no problem and decent cam buckle straps and you can do what ever speed you like!

You reminded me of a car a saw driving in2 the top car park of the tryweryn like twats doing a handbrake turn only to find the boats wernt strapeed on and all fell off taking out his wing mirror and dentin his car

Why all thes difficult solutions?! If you have a proper roofrack just use two straps and pull them tight (always a knot behind the strap!)
I wouldn't use the front and back loops of your kayaks because this can create a terrible noise! (pretty anoying when driving for 8hrs!)
I've been strapping all types of boats on my roof for more than 15 years, driving around europe with 150 km/hr and never had a problem...

no we never had any, we're too poor to get any! although considering you can get a £2000 fine for not having your roof load securley fastened, it could be a good investment!
i think we're pretty sorted now. Basically follow all the stuff you guys have said like tieing the handles to the roof, don't rush it, and don't drive like you're michael schumacher, ANDY!
