Cartwheeling... trouble getting my 3rd end 18 years 11 months ago #6136

Hey everyone. I have been practicing by butt off doing flat water cartwheels, and I've come a long way. I can now get the bow down, pretty much everytime, and then get the stern to drop as well. After that, I have problems. Most of the time, when my stern goes under, I end up with the boat falling on my head. The rest of the time, I'm coming in too flat to get the 3rd end down. Any ideas?

Try this; Just try to start with the weels on a very small angle so you won't fall over on your head. Then increase the angle every time a little more. At some point you find the perfect angle in witch you feel comfortable and won't fall on your head.

also keep your head looking the way you want to go. If your head is rotating then your body will follow as will your boat
also maybe try slowing things down a bit to start with to use good technique instead of grunt everyone goes through this stage when they are learnin tothrow ends keep on practising

Getting from your 2nd to 3rd end is a bit of a battle. I tried slowing things down which helped a lot. Also you can try leaving out the first end by starting with the stern. Paddle backwards throw down the back and then get the transition from stern to bow wired. Looking at some good boaters and getting your paddle round so it is more or less laying on the surface of the water also help.

remember...it's all in your head...

to get you rends right, you need to get your vertical balance...this you will get if you do bowstalls/sternstalls and then link them into ends....

the better/naturally your vertical balance the better/more ends you will get...

there's not that much technique but most of all to keep your balance...the rest is ...

as neil said, usually get one end...slow down (bowstall), then to the stern (sternstall), then to the bow, the stern, the bow and then faster...and you are cartwheeling...

Thanks everyone. I'm sure I'll get it, it's just going to take some time. I seem to run out or momentum by the time I come around for the 3rd end. Maybe I'm taking my stern sweep too soon. Who's to say? Man this stuff is fun. :beat:

What boat are you paddling? depending on what it is, you may be able to try something...

double pump as usual and throw down the bow, then when you are going over past 'the point of no return' (past vertical) instead of taking the next stroke rotate your body and clean the stern. This will give you more time to get your other blade back to where it needs to be, and you will be able to get more power on it. This is how most C1 padlers do it. Good Luck, and keeop wheeling!
