I dunno if anyone has tried it before but yesterday i custom painted my helmet. It is toatally wicked. I have been custom painting for 2 years now and I was bored and realized I could paint my SR super scrappy. I will paint anyone who wants a base color change, fading colors, sparkle jobs, flames, and other designs. My helemt truned out to be a black/ pearl purple mix and Volkswagon purple with sparkle skinny flames. Its amazing!!! i have pics if anyone wants to see them and i will paint helmets.

Dude,

I hope you know what you are doing and used the correct paints.
Most paints that would be considered suitable for such a job (such as car paint) are anything but suitable as they affect the materials that the helmet are made from making them more brittle and weaker. This is certainly not something I would want to happen to my helmet.

If you have used inappropreate paint you may have just trashed your helmet, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

haha its ok man i use automotive paint. Trust me I learned the hard way how certain materials will bond with paint and also structures of paint. I had to redo my paint job because of a chemical reaction but i figurered out a silicone base had seeped under the primer. But my paint job is complete and i have found an effcient way to paint helmets and i will soon have a mini buisness.

Hmm, he says car paint will f' it up. I wouldn't know, I'll keep my kevlar helmet red and black, the way it came.
Sounds cool, but I wouldn't want to risk weakening the helmet, because rocks hurt.[/code]

i dont think paint can affect structure.

paint can affect structure, but quite often you wouldnt see it until you needed it

apperently the best paint to use is motorcycle helmet paint

that is designed specifically for helmets so as not to adversly affect the integrity of it

Yes, using the wrong paint CAN affect the helmet structurally so watch out using the wrong paint, cracking your noggin isnt to fun.

Dude the car paint can cause damage at a molecular level. Essentially the paint creates a chemical reaction with the plastic / composite (espesially bad on compostie) causing the bonds between certan molicules to become damaged / destroyed.

Your helmet will not appear damaged (unless you have access to a high powered electron microscope) but in an impact it is more likley to be brittle and crack / split / smash isto pieces. not a good thing for a helmet.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to put you off what you are doing (custom gear looks cool after all), I am just trying to make sure you don't put yourself and / or others in danger by using thewrong paint.
Use helmet paint as it is designed specificly to avoid this chemical reaction and thus it avoids damaging the helmet.

Ha its been awhile and iv'e been painting a lottt of helmets which look freaking ridicuious!!! every helmet i paint looks better and better!! Ive also learned how to put peoples names on there helmets in cool ways. If anyone wants a custom paintjob to their helmet just give me an e-mail!! My helmet has been turning heads and ive been really busy painting helmets!! I use a special non damaging paint which is safe to the molecular level of helmets. You want a custom helmet? give me an e-mail.

A discussion about damaging helmets by coloring it. I'm still waiting for a manufacturer who says his helmet is strong enough for the impact when you are paddling grade V (creeking). After a lot of mailing to different companies, there is still none which can guarantee me (but a good salesman will sell it for creeking). So i still use my helmet which i used for motorcross.

But if you wanne try to paint a helmet, try gelcoatpaint or use a primer first. If yoy use it correct it won't damage. I've used to paint boats and helmets. Problem for me is to get it glossy.

E-mail them to me and I'll send you the URL's. Don't send massive pics though. People don't want huge photos up in the forums :)

I know the maker of FNA helmets and he gets them airbrushed with automotive paint. I asked him about damaging the helmet and he (and the airbrusher who builds outriggers and canoes) said that there is no problem if the paint is right.

BAS - Please do not paddle in a motorcross helmet. The reason that noone will offer a guarantee is that whitewater is extremely dangerous and the legal liability is too much for any sensible company. If you ask the manufacturer of your helmet they may guarantee it for motorcross and maybe cycling but not whitewater.

The padding in a motorcross helmet will absorb large amounts of water ,become loose and add a lot of weight to your head = neck strain. More importantly, if there is a face guard it will stick out much further than those designed for whitewater presenting a snag risk. If it snags, it will not release and you will either break your neck or drown.

I just found a guy who does an amazing job repainting kevlar whitewater helmets. If you want to talk to him about it send me a message.
