Bow stall tips 18 years 11 months ago #6298

I have just started playboating a few months ago and don't really have anyone in my area to show me what's up. After watching a ton of videos, I'm starting to make some progress.

Yesterday I had a huge breakthrough. I had read that filling your boat with water will give you more balance when learning to bow stall. I put a ton of water in there and sure enough, I was stable. After a few minutes of this, I started removing the water, with a cup, little by little. Each time i removed some, I would hop up on my bow and practice the stall. Each time I took out the water, it got a little harder, but within an hour, I was holding my stall with no water in my boat.

For those of you still learning, I hope this helps you.

Nice tip man. I'll be using that one to impove my bow stall time. Only bad thing is that the water here is a bit on the cold side (even in the swimming pool!)

i never used water to learn to bow stall i always used the side of a pool and learned to stall with just my hands, now when i use my paddle i have perfect balance and can go into pretty much any flat water move

well arent you special  . In my opinion the water is easier because you can take graduated steps toward a normal bow stall. Also, this lets you get a feel for holding the paddle in the right place

Did you paddle forward and lean way fron to set up or did u do a rocker setup on the side like a normal double pump setup step.??

gd question cos it would be hard to double pump with a bow full of water.

Id guess he uses the side of the pool. :)

This technique is purely to learn the balance of the Bow Stall. You fill the boat with a little (or a lot) of water and then use the side of the pool to lift up on. Once you are stable, grab your paddle and slowly put it in the water. From there, just use your paddle, head, and legs, to stay up. Once you feel comfortable, take out some water, until ultimatly you don't have any water in your boat, and your balance is good.

That said. What is the point of a good bowstall if you need the side of a pool to get up? It's lame. So you need to get good at the double pump. That is the key to cartwheels, bowstalls etc.

As for my picture in the Rocker. It was just for fun. You can't double pump an 80 gal boat. I got the idea from watching Titanic. I figured add enough water to any boat and you can get one end to stick up. It sure makes for a good picture.

ive been shuving water in my bow for ages just for luaghs but never thought of using it ot help me learn ill give that a go then. another thing about bow stalls, whats up with people plowing the front of their boats into the water i saw people doing and and gave it a try and from what ive seen its just brute force with no technique at all, the funny part was i saw some bloke the other day just pumping on the side and regaring it as a treick even i a humble no roller find thta a lame trick. whats your opinion?

I think you're talking about a double pump and i wouldn't regard that a trick.
But it is a crucial foundation for nearly every flatwater move.

As fun as flatwater moves are...
they are kind of like kissing your sister:
its good, but it doesnt really count

That said, I like flatwater cartwheels, and it makes it a good way to learn it in a hole

I understand what you are saying, but learning playboating tricks on flatwater helps develop the skill and technique needed. They can then be developed for moving water.
