Lap Belt?!? 18 years 10 months ago #6480

Im wondering what the lap belt in a boat is for? Isnt such an idea dangerous? I myself have a bombproof roll like most people but there is always what if? Does this help with playboating? If so how could i make a safe one?

I don't understand the point of it, if your skirt blows, how much do you want to stay in your now swamped boat?
I understand it for C-boaters, who need something to hold them into the boat, but for a kayak?

like ive seen in some movies such as air force1 where they had lap belts like the snowboard straps. The rachet kind. Like do they hold the boater down and prevent messing up doing playboating moves?

It helps for looping and other tricks that require being really tight. Use a scuba diving weight belt. It is extremely quck release and is for water use. If you can;t loop then you don't need one at all.

Weight belts with metal buckles are better...

obviously you could try a scuba shop, or an online scuba shop

But I have to ask, can you do any tricks that a lab belt would help. It is an unneccasry risk.

Also, Do you feel comfortable going into the play holes that you playboat in withought a paddle or handpaddle

All your questions are answered in the seat belt post a few posts below.

As I said before the lap or seat belt is desinged to hold you tghtly into your boat so your bum does not lift off your seat therefore your paddling can become more effiecant at the price that you cannot escape from your boat as quickly.

I use a velcro lap belt from Palm equipment uk which is easy to pull off with no buckles or ratchets to fail! Quick release buckles such as PFD rescue harness belts or dive weight belts etc are probably better than the ratchets which tend to fail at some point due to their mechanical nature.

Again if you do fit one then I recommend you practise releasing the belt under water start off in a pool then a calmer river ALWAY HAVE A FRIEND NEAR BY TO RESCUE IF NEEDED!

remember that it is extra thing to undo before you can exit your boat! Pull your deck then release the belt before you can exit.
