Large Helmet 18 years 10 months ago #6895

I seem to have a bit of a large head. My oldschool Protec full cut helmet has finally bit the dust, and I need to buy a new helmet but I can't seem to find one that fits. Anybody have any suggestions?

my head's dimensions are:

Circumference= 63 cm
diameter = 20 cm

Can you not find another new Protec???

I too suffer from Giganticus Headicus and thus far, only the XL Protec will fit.

In my humble opinion [b:1c86178e94]IF WORN CORRECTLY[/b:1c86178e94] it is a safe, comfortable lid.

I can't tell you what you should and shouldn't do as we all make our own decisions but all the recent press about Protec has not effected my opinion of these helmets one little bit. I suppose it's a symptom of the big head but when worn, it is physically impossible for my forehead to become exposed.

but I'll say again [b:1c86178e94]IF WORN CORRECTLY[/b:1c86178e94]

I cant figure out the protec, they dont seem to make the same sizes anymore. I had actuallytried to get the new wake model but it wasnt nig enough, nor was the WRSI helmet, or various other models I tried. I will try the grateful heads though, thanks.

Thanks Juneyman...

If/when I have to replace mine, I won't bother with the protec and just go for something else...

Making your own helmet.

ALthough it is not rocket science you definately want to aquire some knowlege about composite work, composite material, etc.

Make one for yourself if you got the basic knowlege of feel like it but do not make one for someone else. Liability is a concern.

I built my helmet by first figuring ourt what I wanted to work with.
I elected to use an epoxy resin, kevlar, fibre glass, a closed cell foam.

The kevlar makes a very resistant final product but the downside are: slightly heavier than other options, really hard to work with (does not like to be cut) not and readilly absorbs water.
It becomes very important to keep the edges well sealed when the product is finished. (loose fuzzy edges will absorb water, cloth without enough resin penetration will be able to absorb water if water enters an edge or the helmet is damaged later on at the location) and the product will deteriorate.

Having said that: Pick the shape you want (I was loking for the baseball cap look which is not great for creeking).
If took a baseball cap soacked it in resin and let it dry on a ball fully (evenly too) formed in the shape of the cap.
Then using body filler, I built up the shape to something that allows my head to fit with a layer of foam in it. (got to have padding)
Extended the back of the helmet shape behind the head and ears.
You have to finish the mold so that it is really smooth. Defects (bumps, dents will make it hard if not impossible o release the product from the mold.

Do a test using plain fibre glass. If you like it the go to your more expensive materials.

There is a lot of technique to laying up the cloth to provide maximum strength to weigt ratio (orientation of each layer, how much resin to use, where to reinforce with additional strips, etc).

One it is done I bashed it around to make sure it wold hold to the level of impact I expect. (thew it against a brick wall a several time. (before painting). It is really solid. If it smashes go back to the design board.

Add straps and retaining strap with rivets.
Glue in the foam with upholstery glue (water proof and sticks like baby shit!)
Pick a color and go for it.
Go to your local paint shop tell him you want paint for composites.

I posted the helmet that I made in my gallery

On the helmet-making subject:

A buddy of mine just made his own helmet, but instead of starting from scratch he used a batter's helmet. He then cut down the huge earflaps, tweaked the back of it a bit, and used rope to set up a chin strap/retaining strap. Any thoughts? I'm about to do the same, and I'm wondering what I'm going to use for the strap rig, because I find my friend's little sketchy (not enough control over the fit, as the rope isn't as adjustable as a buckle strap or ratchet system).

And yes, these would be playboating helmets, they're not nearly solid enough and don't have enough coverage for creeking.
