Has anyone actually done it? 18 years 10 months ago #7140

A lot of the time people ask about building a playspot / wave and it never seems to get very far. i was wondering has anyone actually done it and made themselves a wave.

Im actually workin on one at this time. It is goin good. Me and my buddy worked on an old dam made of rocks and reformed it and made a channel down the middle. It makes a nice hole but it is shallow so we are working on dam the river below to increase river height. Hopefully it will all work out good.

it all depends wether uv got a m8 that drives a digger or dozer, then its possible, the site at llangollen is changed almost every year.

not to mension the regulars that tamper with the bottom hole almost every week during the summer to tweak it for the best prformance in low levels.

My buddies and I are building a small wave below a dam so that we can still play after work before it gets dark. That buys us a few more weeks of paddling after work. Right now we have built a shelf that produces a wave. We have pulled some of the material out just below the shelf to increase its relative height. We have also built a second shelf just at the back of the trough to kick the water up a little bit more. We are working on channelling more water into it by building some walls off the shore. We have to do it all by hand because of the location so it has taken some time. Really its just fun to throw some big rocks around have a beer and see what feature gets built.

Well, here in Norfolk, England, the only way we can get a decent playhole is by throwing various boards into the flow of a small weir. There are quite a few sets of boards, some more complex than others, but all making some form of hole. Its the only whitewater we have!

oh man, that mus tbe terrible. here in eugene oregon there istn really a need to create articial playspots( we have several local ones, but they kinda suck), but some paddlers will usually board up most of a low-head dam to create a decent carthweel spot. Didtn Wavesport used to have a portable-hole or somethig liek that?

So far that sounds better than what we have overhere in Holland :(

We do have rivers but they're wide and slow moving and it's next to impossible to make a playspot or even a small eddy.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but wasn't there a 'wavebox' at the NEC outdoor show a couple of years ago? Made a small pourover in a large pool and they had a competeition in it. Good for wheelin and splitwheelin, dat was about it really....still, better than nothing!

Yep, there was. In Holland we are looking into building/buying something like that as well. See also this thread: playak.com/index.php?option=com_joomlabo...8&id=10864#10864

Yeah man building a good hole isnt too hard you just need some help and pereferably a dam released river. I have a few designs that are basic but work.
Basically find a spot where the river constricts jus a lil bit and has some gradient to it. This spot will work best. Send e your email and i'll draw s scetch on paint.
