I have heard it used when describing eddylines that like to mess with your boat ! cue the accidental stern squirt !

Squirrely water is around eddylines that are boily, swirly, unstable, and just kind of sketchy. Squirt boaters tend to find it appealing. Cat's Pajamas on the Ocoee and Twisted Sister on the Gauley are two good exaples if you're familiar with SE rivers in the States.

I've allways defined squirrly water mentaly as water that is so funky it's really hard to tell exactly whats going on. Features that will be a wave one second, then a hole, then a seam, mellow and almost green for a second..generally big water or creeking features that are quite chaotic. For me the definition is the bottom of Freight Train on the Cal-Salmon at high flows.

Trying to summarize previous posts, and my own experiences: Squirrely water is any water with odd, unpredictable current patterns. It could be found in dynamic eddies, weird wave/holes, strange pourovers, where two large currents collide, wherever. It's more common on larger rivers, where there's more water volume in the current (I'm not familiar with any of the examples, as I live in BC).

In BC I remember some really squirrly water in a eddy on the Thompson, the eddy far river left about halfway down a rapid 3/4 down the run that has The Frog playspot at the top. Fun getting pulled all the way under while in the boat on that one.

imagine a pack of dozens of squirrels running around underneath a tarp adn you'll get an idea of where the name came from.
