Problem flipping, not rolling... 18 years 9 months ago #7503

Hey. I went out to some flatwater the other day to work on my double pump, and my little sister tagged along and video taped me. One of the times I flipped over, but instead of my boat turning all the way over, it only fell half way. The bad part about it was that my head was under water. It was impossible for me to get any sort of feel for the set up, because my boat was in the wrong position, and switching between rolling up on the left side and rolling on the right side didn't seem to help at all. Eventually (after what seemed like 30 seconds, but turned out to be a whopping 3 seconds on the tape) the boat fell all the way over and I was able to roll up.

Does anyone out there have any pointers or ways of avoiding/dealing with this situation?

Thanks.

yeah i know what you mean, it can b a bit unsetteling the first time it happens. it does infact make it easier to roll as a good hip flick will get you back up from that position.

yep, know the feeling.... I'm on the playboating learning curve too. Trial and error, it will pan out. What you are working on also is your combat roll and all kinds of braces, strokes etc.

I kno wthe feeling too. I find its best to just relax once you are past the point of no return, and your boat will sttle out level and upside down, then you can roll fine.

Do you think it would help if I set up on one side and then hipsnapped the other direction. So I could set up on my right side, hip snap on the left (which I hope would completely flip the boat over) and then roll up again? I'm not sure. It sucks because I have a SOOOLLLIIIIDD roll. I can sweep left, right, back deck and hand without any problem, but my new boat keeps doing this half-assed flip over.

what kind of boat is it?
and I promise, if you feel it up on one side, just relax, and let your body hang down freely (you may want to tuck up on the front deck depending how deep it is) and you will feel it fall back to level.

in that case, were you rollong with your overthruster in?
If so, that could have had alot to do with it.

Nope. No overthruster. Sometimes when I switch between setting up on my right side and my left the boat will level out, but not always.

if you get stuck on an edge upside down then normally reaching for the bottom will put you the whole way over..

hope it helps

I tried moving my seat back a little bit. I was thinking that maybe I was a little bow heavy, and because there's sooo much boyancy in the bow of the crazy 88 that maybe my lifejacket and the boat combine were boyant to fully flip.

Does that make any sense, or am I just outta my mind?

I have been, and have watched, people get stuck on their sides in a boat. Like others have said just relaxing is what I do. As long as there is not some nasty hole or rock below you stay under as long as is comfortable. The more you get stuck the more natural and no longer unerving it will feel.
